“Van”, William V. Smith, age 85, passed away on October 29, 2025. He was born in Escanaba, MI to the late William and Emily “Jean” (VanBrocklin) Smith. He grew up in Escanaba with his sister Susan. Van’s father died when he was just 5 years old so he became something of a caretaker in his family. He graduated from Michigan State University and followed that with Washburn Trade School-where he trained to be a chef. Following his educational pursuits, he entered the U.S. Marines and served for three years. It was during his Marine service that he met the young lady who was destined to become “Mrs. Van Smith,” Nancy Peterson. They began as pen pals, that relationship grew into love and they married on December 27, 1964.

Van had an entrepreneurial heart. He and Nancy owned and operated the ABC Kiddie Shop as well as the Peppermill Restaurant in downtown Appleton. Of course, throughout his life there were other employment engagements. He was active in the community, serving for 15 years in United Reading for Success as a tutor as well as in the Kiwanis Club.

He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren as well as great grandchildren when they arrived. His true reason for living was his family. Both he and Nancy put all their energy and love into the lives of their children. Van truly believed that his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were his greatest legacy. He cheered on every accomplishment, held their hands when things didn’t go exactly right and provided loving nudges to continue on and persevere.

Van was a true lover of people. He is fondly remembered for being active in the lives of his children and encouraged fathers of many of their friends to be active as well. Those were friendships that lasted a lifetime. Van was someone who literally had friends around every corner. In his mind, a stranger is just someone he hadn’t met yet. Van could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere-his genuine care and love for people were apparent to all who crossed his path.

Van is survived by his children: Lisa, Stephany, Amy (Mike) and Sean (Cheryl); grandchildren: Joshua, Jasmyn, Maui, Chandler, Annabelle, Jessica; great grandchildren: Jedidiah, Roman, Jose and Lainey. In addition, is survived by the many people whose lives he impacted.

Though we mourn his passing, we find comfort knowing he is reunited with the love of his life, Nancy Smith, whom he deeply missed since her passing in 2019. Their love was profound and enduring, and now they rest together again-a beautiful reunion beyond their life.

At Van’s request, there will be a celebration of life to come, and details will be updated as the plans come together.
