Verna Mae Green

Verna Mae Green (Gast), age 91 of Appleton, WI passed away on February 3, 2026. She was born to late Harvey and Lorena (Reinke) Gast on June 11, 1934 in Mattoon, WI. She graduated from Mattoon High School with the class of ’52 and went on to become a baker for most of her career. She was a member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Local 1473 and was proud to be one. Verna met the love of her life, Richard Green, and they were married in June of 1956. Together, they raised 3 wonderful children.

Verna was a very generous person, known for her giving spirit. She was deeply religious and devoted to the Lord in everything she did. In fact, most of the time, you could find Verna studying the Bible both in and outside of the church. She was also known for making lists of anything and everything – whatever popped into her head, she had to make sure she dictated it so she wouldn’t forget. She was quite the gardener and proudly displayed her beautiful flower gardens to the neighborhood in the warmer months. More than anything, though, Verna loved her family and cherished every moment she could spend with her kids and grandkids. Much time was spent at sleepovers, cuddling in front of the fireplace. She celebrated every accomplishment in their lives and attended every sporting event or musical recital she could possibly attend. Verna was so proud of everyone she helped to raise.

Verna will be deeply missed by her children, Scott (Terri) Green of Greenville, Timm (Jeannie) of Appleton, and Robin (Steve) Van Grinsven of Crandon; her grandchildren, Ryan (Jaimy) Green, Danielle (Andy) Trefethren, Aaron (Jenny) Green, Jordan (Emily) Green, Nicholl Green, Gina (Tim) Schmidt, Katie (Reid) Biesterveld, and Eric (Amanda) Van Grinsven; and her great-grandchildren, Carter, Raegan, Kellan, River, Kenrich, Milana, Winston, Kinley, Karsyn, Quincy, Pierce, Stella, Fiona, and Emma June. She is further survived by her brother, Dean Gast; as well as many other extended relatives and dear friends.

Verna is preceded in death by her husband, Dick, in 2012; along with other family and friends.

A funeral visitation will be held for Verna from 9-11 AM on Friday, February 13, 2026 at Faith Lutheran Church, 601 E. Glendale Ave, Appleton, WI 54911 with a funeral service to follow at 11 AM. Verna will be laid to rest with her husband, Dick, at Highland Memorial Park in Appleton, WI.
