With heavy hearts, we announced that Thomas Martin Toonen past away on July 31st, 2026 in Appleton, WI. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, and friend. Tom was born January 4th, 1945 to the late Thomas and Viola (Vanden Heuvel) Toonen. Tom’s presence brought comfort, humor, and unwavering dependability to everyone who knew him.

Tom was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Susan Toonen. Married in 1975, Tom and Sue built a strong and loving blended family together—one filled with shared traditions, laughter, and support.

He was survived by his siblings: Robert Toonen (Kathy), Barb Mottl (Marty,deceased), and Richard Toonen.

Tom is survived by his children: Tammy Friestrom (John), Shelly Van Dehy, Tracy Nutting (Brad), and Nicole Toonen. Tom took pride in each of them and the families they created.

Tom’s grandchildren were a constant source of joy: Tyler Friestrom (Lauren), Eric Friestrom (Macy), Alesha Friestrom, Adam Vancuyk (Trisha), Brandon VanAsten, Michael Van Dehy, Karissa Felsing, Kimberly Courtney (Andy), Alison Wasmund (Wade), and Grayson Toonen.

He cherished his great-grandchildren: James, Tommy, Lily, William (deceased), Lucy, Ella, Logan, Carter,Camryn, Caydence, Caliyah, Aiden, and Colton.

Later in life, Tom shared a special companionship with Judy Hawkins, whose friendship brought great comfort. They enjoyed spending time at Anderson Lake and hitting the slots! . .

Tom dedicated over 40 years to Kimberly‑Clark Corporation, where he was known for his reliability and strong work ethic. Prior to his time at Kimberly‑Clark, he served as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force, stationed in Turkey. His years of service were something he carried with pride.

Tom found joy in the simple comforts of everyday life. He rarely missed a Green Bay Packers game and liked settling in with a cold beer and peanuts. Trips to Sawyer Lake for fishing were a favorite way to relax. He looked forward to going up north to play cards with the guys and squeeze in a bit of hunting—though some trips involved more cards than deer. He appreciated country music, western movies, and the routine of sharing a “shake of the day”and Friday fish fries.

Family was always at the center of Tom’s life. He enjoyed holidays, gatherings, and any chance to spend time with his children, grandchildren, and great‑grandchildren. He valued simplicity—being there, staying present, and caring for those around him.

The funeral will be held on August 13th, 2026, at Wichmann Funeral Home, 537 N. Superior Street, Appleton, WI 54911. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by the service at 11:00 a.m. In honor of Tom, guests are welcome to wear their Green Bay Packers attire. Go Pack Go!
