Robert J. Smith

Robert “Bob” James Smith, age 83 of Menasha, WI joined his heavenly kingdom on August 31, 2026 with his family by his side. He was born to Lyle and Muzette (Ehlers) Smith on November 8, 1942 in Neenah, WI. After graduating from Neenah High School with the class of ’60, he served in the Army Reserves for several years. After his discharge, he went on to work for Wisconsin Natural Gas (AKA WE Energies). After retirement, he worked part-time as a teacher’s aide at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, assisting in classes about natural gas. Bob met the love of his life, Judy Coenen through a mutual acquaintance at the Cinderella Ballroom and they were married in May of 1963 at Sacred Heart Church in Appleton. Together, they had 3 wonderful children.

If anything could be said about Bob, it would be that he was a dedicated man. Dedicated to his work, dedicated to his faith, and certainly dedicated to his family. He was an exceptionally loving and encouraging man. In his free time, he enjoyed golfing, hunting, and bowling. In his youth, you could often find Bob out with Judy, practicing their bean-bagging for tournaments in their league. More recently, though, you could more often see Bob and Judy at the casino, having fun and socializing with friends and family. More than anything, though, Bob loved his family and cherished every moment he could spend with his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids.

Bob will be deeply missed by his wife, Judy; his children, Keith (Lori), Nancy (Dave), and Steve (Marsha); his grandchildren, Bill (Rachel), Bobbi (Zach), and Chelsea; his great-grandchildren, Ellewood, Parker, Isabella, and Olivia; as well as many nieces, nephews, other extended relatives, and dear friends.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Lyle and Muzette; and his brothers, Richard (Noreen) and Ronald.

A memorial visitation will be held for Bob from 9-11 AM on Thursday, September 10, 2026 at St. Patrick's Catholic Parish, 324 Nicolet Blvd, Menasha, WI 54952 with a mass to follow at 11 AM.  Bob will be laid to rest at St. Mary's Cemetery in Menasha, WI.  In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the American Cancer Society in honor of Bob.

Bob’s family would like to extend a special thanks to the nurses, doctors, and other supporting staff at St. Elizabeth Hospital, especially the hospitalists on the second floor, for taking such good care of him. Also a special thanks to Bob’s neighbors, Al and Julie Rooyakers for their companionship and support through his times of difficulty.
