Rita Veerkamp, 85, of Appleton, was born to eternal life on April 13, 2012 at Appleton Medical Center, surrounded by her family. Rita was born on August 30, 1926 in Appleton to Joseph and Alma (Flesch) Dohr. She graduated from Appleton West High School, St. Agnes School of Nursing and received her BS from Marquette University in public health nursing. She married Norbert Veerkamp in June of 1961, who was the dean of the Milwaukee School of Engineering. After the death of her beloved husband, she moved back to Appleton to be with her family, and raised her children while working as a school nurse. Rita will be remembered for her sense of humor, her multiple bridge clubs and her generous spirit. She was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church.
Rita is survived by her daughter Linda Veerkamp, and son Donald Veerkamp, brothers Carl (Judy) Dohr, Paul (Ellie) Dohr, sister Marge Palmer, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many, many friends. Rita was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Norbert, sisters, Althea Dohr, Dolores (Clarence) Smith, Lilas Dohr, brothers, Robert and Russell (Lois) Dohr, a brother-in-law, Jack Palmer and a sister-in-law Elaine and many other relatives.
The funeral liturgy will be held on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at ST. THOMAS MORE CATHOLIC CHURCH (1812 N. McDonald St) at 11:00 AM with Fr. Jim Lucas and Fr. Gerald Falk concelebrating. A time of visitation will be held on Wednesday from 9:00 AM until the time of the service at the church.
A memorial will be established in Rita's name.
