Menasha

Richard “Dick” Lee Wehrel, age 83, passed peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, May 22, 2025. Richard was born on January 13, 1942, in Indianapolis, Indiana, son of Albert and Florence (Fisse) Wehrel. Richard graduated from Scecina Memorial High School in 1960 and received his undergraduate degree at Butler University. He then received a law degree from Indiana University. He was blessed to meet Shirley Miller when a mutual friend introduced them, and they would later elope on October 17, 1974. The family moved several times for Richard’s jobs, finally settling in the Menasha area in 1990. He retired from Appvion as treasurer and stayed on several more years as a consultant.

Richard was a hard-worker and took great pride in taking care of his family and home. He enjoyed playing cards, tennis and golf. He had a strong faith and attended St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Menasha. He loved reading, watching sports, and spending time with his grandchildren. Spending time with the grandchildren brought him joy and they could always get him to laugh.

Richard will be missed by his devoted daughters: Ann (Kevin) Huelsbeck and Jane (Joe Pollock) Wehrel; his grandchildren: Brenden and Kylee Huelsbeck; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by and reunited with his loving wife, Shirley (Miller), and further preceded in death by his parents; aunt Louise and uncle Tony.

A private family ceremony was held at the funeral home. Condolences may be expressed at www.wichmannfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Parkinson’s Foundation www.parkinson.org or The Michael J. Fox Foundation www.michaeljfox.org for Parkinson’s Research are greatly appreciated.

Richard’s family would like to offer their heartfelt thank you to CopperStone Assisted Living, the caregivers and physical therapists, and his friends and family for their love and support.
