Richard L. Pomeroy, affectionately known as "Sammy," passed away peacefully on June 10, 2025, at ThedaCare - Appleton. Born on April 23, 1941, in Appleton, he was a beloved figure in his community, known for his generous spirit and gracious demeanor.
Richard dedicated many years of his career to Thilmany Pulp and Paper, retiring in 2001. He was not just a colleague but a friend to many at the workplace, where his kind-hearted nature left a lasting impression. Richard proudly served in the United States Air Force, an experience that greatly shaped his character and sense of responsibility.
One of Richard's greatest joys in life was spending time with family and friends. He created treasured memories during fishing trips to Minnesota with his nephews Sam and Rick, and road trips to Shawano with his nephew Brian. He enjoyed lively casino trips with Sam and Lori, embodying a spirit of fun and camaraderie. Richard had a passion for sports, particularly anything related to the Kaukauna Ghosts, culminating in his role as a supportive fan amongst his community.
For decades, Richard played the role of Santa Claus during the holiday season, a testament to his love for family traditions. Each year, he also prepared a special oyster stew, a recipe that now holds a place in the hearts and kitchens of his nieces and nephews. His participation in a Bible study group every Monday with the MOB reflected his deep faith and commitment to his community.
Richard was loved by all who had the honor of knowing him. He possessed a special soul and had a remarkable ability to connect with those around him; he knew everyone in town, and truly, everyone in town knew him. His kindness and friendship will be remembered fondly by all.
Richard is survived by his sister-in-law Joan Pomeroy and his very special nephew Sam Longsine, who shared a close bond with Richard throughout their lives. Richard's legacy is deeply enriched by the countless shared experiences and moments of joy they created together. He was like a second father to Sam, participating in activities from Boy Scouts to forming a CYO Basketball team with an impressive winning record. Their adventures included a memorable trip to California to attend Super Bowl XXXII, forging a friendship that likely surpassed familial ties.
He was preceded in death by his parents Samuel and Irene Pomeroy; and siblings: Clifford (Nancy) Pomeroy, Elaine (Leonard) Else, Irvin Pomeroy, and Shirley (Carlton) Longsine. The love of family lived deeply within Richard; their memories will live on through his legacy.
The family extends very special and heartfelt thanks to the caring angels that made it possible for Richard to remain in his home, particularly Patty, who assisted with errands and transportation. The staff at Oakridge Gardens—especially Becky, Lacey, and Kaitlyn—provided kindness and support that greatly enriched his life. ThedaCare at Home Hospice played an invaluable role in ensuring Richard's comfort during his final days, and his neighbors, including Gerry and Jeanne, Jamie and Jenny, and Glen and Diane, forged beautiful friendships with him.
Richard L. Pomeroy left this world leaving behind a powerful legacy of love, friendship, and generosity. His presence will be sorely missed, yet his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A visitation will take place at Bethany Lutheran Church, located at 124 W. 10th Street in Kaukauna on June 19, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service that will begin at 1:00 PM. Rev. Rod Krueger will officiate.
