Richard H. Benz

Richard “Rick” Hans Benz, age 82 of Combined Locks, WI passed away peacefully at home on July 30, 2026. He was born to Everett and Doris (Slang) Benz in Lena, WI. After graduating from high school, Rick enlisted with the Navy, faithfully serving his country before his honorable discharge in August of 1968. Rick went back to school for an Associate degree and utilized his leadership skills as a manager at Wisconsin Bell. In 1971, Rick married the love of his life, Diane Van Vreede, and together, they raised 3 wonderful children.

Rick found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He was an avid fisherman. In his younger years, he enjoyed bird and deer hunting. Rick was always down to have a beer with friends at Kamp’s bar or at his hunting land in Millston. He will be remembered for his humor, his stories, and the genuine way he connected with others. Whether casting a line, taking a boat ride, seeing a movie, playing a game of cribbage or sheepshead, or sitting on the front porch watching the birds flit amongst Diane’s beautiful flowers, Rick’s favorite moments were those spent with family. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Rick is survived by his wife, Diane Benz; his children, Aaron (Elleyn) Benz, Ryan (Karla) Benz, and Breckan (Brian) Feltz; his grandchildren, Sam Eddington III, Jacob Benz, Meghan Benz, Karsten Benz, Malena Benz, Brant Feltz, Braden Benz, Rylan Feltz, and Jason Benz; his siblings, Jan Feudner, Evans (Pat) Benz, Lyle (Pat) Benz, and Cheryl (Ron) Habeck; his siblings-in-law, Carol (Lee) Hietpas, Donna (Gary) Sauby, Lyle Van Vreede, Gary (Sue) Van Vreede, Mary (Ed) Balcerak, Lee (Stephanie) Van Vreede, Dave Rasmussen, Matt Knapp, and Karen Benz; as well as many nieces, nephews, other extended relatives, and dear friends.

Rick is preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Doris Benz; his parents-in-law, Alois and Elaine Van Vreede; his siblings, Ken Benz and Roger Benz (infant); and his siblings-in-law, Dan Van Vreede, Don Van Vreede, Jan Knapp, Patricia Rasmussen, and Mary Lou Van Vreede (infant).

A funeral visitation will be held from 9-11 AM on Friday, August 14, 2026 at Wichmann Tri-County Chapel, 1592 S. Oneida St, Menasha, WI 54952 with a funeral service to follow at 11 AM. Rick will be laid to rest at St. John’s United Church of Christ Cemetery in Cecil, WI. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the American Legion Post 38 in Appleton, located on College Avenue in honor of Rick’s legacy.
