Age 91, formerly of Appleton, passed away at St. Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis on Sunday, July 26, 2009. She was born in Fond du Lac on June 4, 1918 the daughter of the late Martin and Myrtle (Davis) Schmidt. On October 14, 1939 she married her husband of 63 years, Orville Haefer, who preceded Norma in death on December 21, 2002. Norma was very active in her church, attending Bible studies and serving as Sunday School teacher for elementary Sunday School at First English Lutheran Church. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees with her husband, Orville. While at Summer Trace Retirement Community in Carmel, she was known as the Word Search and Bingo Queen. Norma will be remembered for her love of life, exceptional culinary skills, interest in sewing, and devotion to family and friends.
Norma is survived by her children: Rev. Ronald (Susan) Haefer of Wilson, NY and Judy (Donald) Benziger of Carmel, IN; five grandchildren: Mike Haefer, Rachel Bradich, Natalie Scott, Jason Benziger, and Erin Benziger; several great-grandchildren; and sister, Delores Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orville; her parents; and two brothers: Albert Schmidt and John “Jack” Schmidt.
The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2009 at PRINCE OF PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH, 2330 E. Calumet St., Appleton, with Rev. Gary Nokleberg officiating. Friends will be received at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in Appleton Highland Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established to be divided among various causes.
