Obituary

Nancy A. Madisen, age 88, died May 23, 2026. She was born November 15, 1937 in Hatley, Wisconsin, to Verne C. Pickering and Dora C. Pickering (nee Zoromski). She married her husband of 60 years, Erik L. Madisen, Jr. on October 22, 1960.

She is survived by a son, Erik III (Jean Radtke), a daughter Randi (Jeremy White); two grandchildren, Benjamin White (Rebecca Wiersma) and Dana White; one great-grandchild; and her brother, Verne (Pat) Pickering. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brothers, Donald and Roger Pickering.

Nancy graduated from Carroll College in 1959, then taught first grade for two years in Neenah. She had 36 first graders in her first classroom. She met her husband at a party thrown by her roommates, where he noticed her and asked for a date. After her children were born, the family lived in Appleton, and she volunteered with the Girl Scouts, the Mosquito Hill Nature Center, and the Appleton Area Public Schools. She was active with the American Field Service, and in 1977 - 78, the family hosted a student from Thailand, Pisit Bhumiwat. Once her children were grown, she earned an accounting degree from Fox Valley Technical College. She was also a member of the Appleton Lioness Club, serving as treasurer for many years.

She was a long-time member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Appleton, serving as a Sunday School teacher and in other volunteer capacities.

She loved flowers and gardening. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband and time in Door County with family.

Special thanks to family friend Barbara Walters, her husband Ed, and their son, Eric for their help and care over the years.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to PBS Wisconsin. A memorial service will be held on June 27, 2026, at 11:30 am at First Congregational Church, 724 E. South River St., Appleton, WI. Friends and family may gather and share memories from 10:45 until the service begins. Reception to follow.
