Michael Gary “Coop” Coopman, age 76, of Swannanoa, NC passed away on Monday, June 5, 2023, at the John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center in Asheville, NC.
Mike was born on January 19, 1947 in Appleton, Wisconsin, to the late Richard Coopman and Evelyn Lucas Coopman. He was a 1965 graduate of St. Mary’s Catholic School in Menasha, WI and served his country proudly in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.
Mike retired from his electrician and instrumentation technician position at Wisconsin Tissue Mills in 2005. He was a hardworking, dependable, family man who made sure his family was provided for always.
He was a wonderful and loving husband, father, and grandfather. Mike was known as one of the nicest men you’d ever meet. He was a great friend and neighbor to all. He had a great sense of humor, was fun to be around and enjoyed coming up with nicknames for everyone he met. He also enjoyed being outdoors and loved to go fishing and hunting. Mike was a classic car enthusiast as well and liked to go to local car shows.
Most importantly, Mike adored and cherished his family and was very involved with his children’s activities as they grew up and spending quality time together was his priority. Those happy times are now comforting memories.
In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by his three brothers, Ronald “Bud” Coopman, Richard “Dick” Coopman, and Kenny Coopman; two sisters, Lois Scheurle and Rosane Coopman; a niece, Susan Scheurle; and two nephews, Ron “Skeeter” Scheurle and Danny Coopman.
Those left behind to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 50 years, Peggy Muck Coopman; son, Cory (Meredith) of Lakeside, MT; a daughter, Cindy (Matt) Long, of Swannanoa, NC; three grandsons, Grayson Cooper Long of Swannanoa, NC, Eli Michael and Easton Coopman both of Lakeside, MT; two sister-in-laws, Lory Coopman and Mary Coopman, both of Menasha, WI; and a host of nieces, and nephews.
A gathering to celebrate the life of Mike was held on Friday, June 9, 2023, at 4:00 PM at Louise’s, 115 Black Mountain Ave., Black Mountain, NC 28711.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on July 14, 2023 at 4:00 PM at Whistler’s Knoll, N2845 WI-15, Hortonville, WI 54944 with full military honors. Burial will take place at Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, N 2665, County Rd QQ, Waupaca, WI 54981.
In addition, Penland Family Funeral Home in Swannanoa, NC is assisting the family with local services in NC.
