BELLG, MARY K.
Mary K. Bellg, 92, of Appleton, died on Sunday, September 27, 2009.
Mary was born on August 23, 1917, in Lorain, Ohio. She was the youngest
daughter of Joseph and Barbara (Miso) Karahuta.
In her teens and throughout her life, Mary was a tennis player, winning
the women's championship in her
hometown. She received a scholarship to the University of Chicago and
worked to support herself while earning her B.A.
After graduating, for several years she taught high school English.
During WWII, she served as a civilian in the Army Quartermaster Corps in
Detroit. After the war, Mary became personnel director and training
director for several department store chains in the Midwest, including
Montgomery Wards and Sears.
Mary married Albert J. Bellg, of Toledo, Ohio, on November 21, 1951, in
Bowling Green, Ohio, and had two children, Albert and Barbara. She
returned to school and received an M.A. from the University of Toledo,
after which she joined the faculty and taught communication skills and
art history until she retired as an Associate Professor. Her business
experience helped her succeed at her other professional interest,
teaching executives and
professionals to read more effectively.
Mary was a potter, a painter, a gardener, a reader (especially of
biographies) and enjoyed camping and fishing in Canada. She caught of
the largest northern pike ever taken from Mountain Lake in Ontario.
Mary had many friends, most of whom have samples of her beautiful
pottery. She celebrated and supported the accomplishments
of women and felt great satisfaction at helping women enter the work
force and succeed at their jobs.
Mary is survived by her sister, Margaret Ule; her children, Albert
(wife Laurin) and Barbara; and her grandchildren, Kathryn and Kara. She
was preceded in death by her husband; her sister, Anna Swartz; and her
brother, John.
