Marjorie J. “Midge” Schweitzer, 91, passed away on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at Valley VNA. Midge was born on November 4, 1923 to Joseph and Margaret (Neugebauer) Meiers. On September 29, 1945 she was united in marriage to John F. Schweitzer in Appleton.
She was a champion for the underprivileged, with a passionate focus on social justice. Midge responded to Appleton's need for transitional housing when she introduced Project Open Door in 1993, remodeling an empty convent for the homeless. She also served as a mentoring coordinator, helping the homeless prepare for independent living. For many years she chaired the St. Joseph Parish Social Concerns/Justice Committee. Midge was co-president of the Christ Child Society and served as co-director of Christ Child Camp, which served the developmentally disabled. Midge and her family prepared and served a community Easter dinner at St. Joseph Parish. She also served as coordinator of Fr. Glenn's Mission Club, organizing collections of supplies for shipment to the Capuchin Mission in Nicaragua. Midge received the Gaudium et Spes award from the Green Bay Diocese in 1999. She was a very active and outgoing person with a very soft heart and strong faith. Most of all, Midge was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend. The special memories she made with her family and friends will always be treasured. She was a fantastic cook, loved playing cards, enjoyed music, dancing and a good practical joke.
