Laverne “Hank” Sassman, age 91, passed away on September 13, 2026. He was born to the late Edwin and Clara (Bartman) Sassman on April 8, 1935. He spent his youth in Black Creek, WI. After high school, Hank entered the US Army where he served in Germany. Upon returning from his service, he “stole the purse” of a young lady at a local watering hole. That young lady was Joyce Kaminski. Hank won her heart and they were married for 65 years and had one daughter.
Hank was active throughout his life. He was a fantastic baseball player. As a left-handed pitcher, he had several no-hitter games. He also participated in bowling leagues. Hank loved Wisconsin sports. He was especially passionate about the Wisconsin Badgers.
His work also reflected his active personality as he worked concrete construction as well as becoming an Appleton Fireman. Afterward, he enjoyed his new career in health care insurance sales. Later, he and his daughter worked together at Sassman Insurance.
He loved spending time with his grandchildren and his family. It is said that everyone has a story to tell about Hank. He was never one to be short of words of humor or sassiness. Most of all, Hank had a sparkling personality. He was notorious for “Hank stories” and that tradition carried through his life.
Hank is survived by his loving family including his daughter Jacquelyn (Dennis Kohl) Sassman, grandchildren: Avery Zuleger, Shyanne Zuleger. In addition, there are many friends, nieces and nephews and clients that will miss his presence.
He was preceded in death by his wife Joyce and his four siblings.
