Age 85, passed away at St. Paul Home in Kaukauna on Friday, March 6, 2009. A lifelong resident of Kimberly, Joseph was born August 19, 1923 to Leo and Marie Santkuyl.

He joined the US Army Air Corp during WWII and served his country as part of the 464th Bomb Group. He was gravely injured in Italy and after a lengthy recovery he received an honorable discharge. Unfortunately, his injuries affected him every day of his life.

He married Jean Ellen Thompson in Appleton on September 13, 1947. Together they raised 10 children. Joe retired from the Kimberly School district in 1985 as a custodian.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Norbert; brother-in-law, Bernie Smith; and son-in-law Roger Jackson. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jean, and their children: Linda (Steve) Burkart of Eau Claire, David (Pat) of Keshena, Dennis (Sue) of Chimazat, Guatemala, Kay (Mark) Hagens of Kimberly, Wayne of Appleton, Jo Ann (Rob) Dunlop of Menasha, Keith “Vinnie” (Terryl) of Kaukauna, Gary (Wendy) of Appleton, Lee of Milwaukee, and Dale (Liesl) of Tacoma, WA. He is further survived by his grandchildren: Sara Bach, Angie Johnson; Valerie, Richard Santkuyl; Jillian Blount, Monica Riske, Bryan Santkuyl; and Mike Dunlop; and Eli and Zane Santkuyl; great-grandchildren; twins Sofia and Lidia, Mia, Elizabeth and one due in August; brother and sisters: Art (Joan) Santkuyl, Christine (Bob) Biechler, Delores (Bill) Caraker; sister-in-law Pat Santkuyl; and in-laws: Jack and Cleo, Bob and Barb, Glenn and Delores, and Guy and Erma Thompson; six step-grandchildren, 45 nieces and nephews, and many lifelong friends.

The funeral liturgy will be at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, March 9, 2009 at HOLY SPRIRIT PARISH, Kimberly Campus, 600 E. Kimberly Ave, Kimberly, with Fr. David Beaudry officiating. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00p.m. and at the church on Monday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in King Veteran Cemetery, King, WI.

The family extends their sincere appreciation to the staff at St. Paul Elder Service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the VA Clinic in Appleton or the Disabled American Veterans.
