John "Jack" A. McMahon

February 5, 1933 — October 10, 2025

Appleton

John Angus McMahon, known as Jack to his family and friends, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2025 at the age of 92.

Jack was born on February 5, 1933 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His life was shaped early on by the loss of his mother when he was just two years old. He and his younger brother Dick were raised by their father and grandparents. This life altering event left a profound impression on him and instilled a deep appreciation for family — a devotion that guided and defined his story throughout his life.

As a young man, Jack attended Cretin Military High School, where he served proudly as Cadet Colonel. He was deeply influenced by the Christian Brothers who mentored him during those years. It was also during this time that fate introduced him to Margaret Ann, the love of his life, at the Cretin High School Military Ball. That moment began a love story that would span a lifetime; they married five years later.

Jack graduated from the University of Minnesota before serving in the U.S. military. Following his service, he began a distinguished 35 plus-year career with Kimberly-Clark, a journey that took Jack, Margaret Ann, and their growing family to homes across the United States and even to Johannesburg, South Africa, for two memorable years. Family time was incredibly important to Jack whether it was time around a campfire in northern Wisconsin or singing “On Top of Old Smokey” in the car on a long drive to California or Canada; or even experiencing safaris in Africa.

Jack enjoyed intellectual discussions on many topics including current events, family genealogy and history. That coupled with his wry wit left a lasting impression. Jack will be remembered for his curiosity, integrity and the quiet strength with which he approached life. His love for family and his interest in the world around him left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

A man of steadfast faith, Jack lived each day with integrity and purpose. He led by example, quietly modeling the values he held dear for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was a longtime member of St. Bernard Parish in Appleton, where his faith community meant a great deal to him.

Jack and Margaret Ann found great joy in travelling around the world and spending time with their grandchildren. Jack also cherished the time he and Margaret Ann spent together enjoying their many years in Florida.

Jack is lovingly remembered by his children: Tim McMahon (Sarah), Kathy Knutson (Steve), Geoff McMahon (Deb), Maureen Holloway (Dave), and Meg Stillman (Steve). He was very proud of his 14 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Margaret Ann, his wife of 68 years.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate teams at Touchmark Retirement Community and St. Croix Hospice in Appleton Wisconsin for their exceptional care and kindness.

Jack’s legacy of love, faith, and family will continue to live on in all who were blessed to know him.

Memorial donations may be made in Jack’s name to “The Margaret Ann Mahoney McMahon Memorial International Cultural Scholarship Endowment Fund”. This endowment was created by Jack in honor of Margaret at Cretin-Derham Hall High School in St. Paul Minnesota, where their story began. This scholarship supports students who exhibit a strong talent and interest in foreign languages and international culture with the intent to pursue a related career. The family requests no flowers for the service.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Cretin-Derham Hall High School on Saturday, November 15th at 10:15 AM. Cretin-Derham is located at 550 South Albert Street, please enter through Door #1. Following the mass, a luncheon will be served at the University Club at 420 Summit Avenue, St Paul.
