John “Tony” Anthony George
“Tony” was welcomed into the loving arms of his Lord on January 8, 2024, at the age of 91. Tony was born in Trinidad, Colorado on May 28, 1932, son of the late George T. and Margaret E. (Givens) George. He graduated from Trinidad High School in 1950. Tony led a remarkable life filled with achievements and cherished moments. Tony excelled in both football and baseball leaving a lasting impact as a dedicated high school athlete. He further pursued his passion at Colorado College, majoring in Business Administration and continuing his athletic endeavors in football and baseball. Following college, Tony served his country in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958 with an honorable discharge.
He then embarked on a beautiful journey of love and companionship marrying Ruth E. Werner in Appleton, WI on October 3, 1959, at St. Mary’s Church. They shared a special love that lasted through life’s difficulties and blessings, always trusting in the Lord. They knew how to laugh and work together while being content with what they shared.
Tony will be sadly missed by his daughter Jean George, daughter-in-law Susan George, and granddaughters Amanda (Brett) Larson and Angela (Jake) Kapp. He is further survived by his brother-inlaw Ray (Dorothy) Werner of Washington along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Tony was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ruth, a son Richard George, brothers Gerald and Elias “Richard” George, and sister Marie George. He was also preceded in death by a special brother-inlaw and fishing partner Richard “Dick” Werner.
Tony worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Appleton as a Postal Clerk and retired in 1987. At the Post Office, he made good friends including Dick Melchert whom he attended that very frigid and legendary football game in 1967, at Lambeau Field, known as the “Ice Bowl.” Later, Tony shared a special time with his son Richard when they attended the Super Bowl in 1997 at New Orleans while bringing back “beads” for the family. Tony and Richard attended many seasons of Green Bay Packers football games. This was their special time. Ruth gave Tony season tickets beginning in 1958. They attended the games together and were long time season ticketholders.
An avid trout fisherman, Tony mastered the art of catching “prized” trout in Wisconsin streams. Tony and his fishing friends Dick Werner and Jim Rogers shared many fishing stories and good times together. Tony had many diverse talents that included restoring his Ford pick-up truck and making tooled leather purses and belts for family and friends. He masterfully carved exquisite wooden boxes with the vision and creativity to make each piece of art come alive. Most of all, Tony loved spending time with his family. He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and mental toughness. Tony’s spirit will forever inspire us, and his memory will always be a source of comfort and strength.
The family would like to give special thanks to the late Dr. David Warner, Dr. Louis Suarez, Dr. Peter Ackell, Dr. Thomas Mattio, and Dr. Jack Anderson. We are especially grateful to Nurse Michelle at Theda Care Regional Medical Center – Appleton who took care of Tony during his last night on the fifth floor. We will always remember your compassion and kindness.
The funeral service for Tony will be at 11:00 am on Monday, January 15, 2024, at FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH, 601 E. Glendale Avenue, Appleton, WI 54911. Pastor Dan Thews will be officiating, and interment will be at Highland Memorial Park in Appleton. Family and friends may gather at the church on Monday from 9:00 am to 11:00 am until the time of service. Wichmann Funeral Home is assisting the family.
In honor of Tony, let us embrace Colossians 3:12: “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.
