Johanna E. Weingartner, age 99, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 6, 2011, at her home in Menasha. Johanna was born on September 23, 1911, in Neudeck, Germany, daughter of the late Adolf and Anna (Wittek) Waniek. She worked as a registered nurse in Germany, and as a nurse for the Red Cross during World War II. On September 22, 1940, she was married to Alfred Weingartner in Neudeck. Johanna was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Menasha for many years. She loved winter, hiking and cross-country skiing, sailing, and the symphony.
Johanna is survived by her two sons, Ulrich (Virginia) Weingartner, and their children, Erik and Heidi, and Thomas Weingartner, who took care of his mother for the past eight years. She was further preceded in death by her husband, Alfred; three brothers, Ernst. Martin, and Gottfried; and one sister, Charlotte.
The funeral service for Johanna will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 9, 2011, at the WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME, TRI-COUNTY CHAPEL, with Rev. Dee Sim officiating. Friends may call on Wednesday at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park, Appleton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Theda Care at Home Hospice, 3000 East College Avenue, Appleton, 969-0919.
