Jean Suzanne Consie, beloved sister, devoted teacher and faithful servant of God, passed peacefully into eternal rest on October 10, 2026, at the age of 80 in Appleton, Wisconsin.
Born on November 25, 1945, in Ironwood, Michigan, Jean always had a deep love for learning. She started kindergarten at just four years old, which made her first year a challenge, but she channeled that early hurdle into a lifelong mission to make education a positive experience for every student. She dedicated 39 years to teaching, spending most of her career with the third grade at the historic Nicolet School in Kaukauna, Wisconsin. There she shaped more than 1,000 young minds with patience, kindness and a gentle humor that made her classroom a place of joy, safety and discovery. Colleagues remember her as a dedicated educator who spent countless hours bringing her lessons to life. Her career spanned generations. In her later years, she even taught the children of some of her former students--a testament to the trust and respect she earned within the local community. After retiring, she continued to help colleagues with special projects to benefit the students and school.
A devoted member of the Catholic Church in both Ironwood and Appleton, Jean lived her faith daily. She led and participated in the weekly rosary, brought communion to homebound members, knitted caps for newborns, printed the church bulletin and offered guidance and support to immigrating Congolese families as they adjusted to life in a new country. Her quiet acts of service and unwavering commitment to her church family were a testament to her character.
Jean enjoyed reading, knitting and baking, including her famous pumpkin rolls, scones, and sugar cookies. She had a special love for travel, including to England, Ireland, Scotland and Italy where she delighted in the charm of daily life in small villages, walking through the countryside and exploring historic sites. She also travelled extensively in the U.S. As a young woman, she drove with her young brother through many of the western states in a 1966 Mustang with no air conditioning.
Jean is survived by her devoted sister Judy; her brothers Robert (Maryann) and Jerry (Mary), as well as a niece, several nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Jean Consie. She will be remembered for her sharp wit, unwavering faith, her dedication to education, and her generous spirit.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church, 312 S State Street, Appleton, on October 27, 2026, at 11:00 am. Friends and family may gather at the church from 9:30am until the mass begins. Jean will be interred at Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood, MI at a later date.
