Janet Elizabeth (Mayes) Flood, 78, of Appleton, died of complications due to kidney failure on Monday, September 23, 2024. In her final days, she and the family were supported by Hospice Care. Her daughter was at her side when she died.
Janet was born November 12, 1945, in Kansas City, MO. She grew up in Mount Lebanon, a suburb of Pittsburgh, PA. Her high school graduation was in 1963 from Mt Lebanon High School.
In late 1966, Janet met Kenneth E. Flood, Jr. in Lawrence, KS. Ken took her back to his home state of WI, and they were married in August 1967. Janet became a Wisconsinite—learning to love the Packers and eat cheese, though she never developed a taste for beer.
One of Janet’s proudest accomplishments was returning to college in the late 1980’s. She graduated in 1990 with an associate degree (UW Centers Fox Valley), then in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree (UW Oshkosh), and finally in 1995 with a master’s degree (UW Milwaukee). She became a licensed clinical social worker and enjoyed the profession until she retired in 2005.
After retirement, Janet became a volunteer with CAP Services. She was recognized in 2011 as a Ted Long CAPartner—an award recognizing individual and organizational partners who have made an outstanding contribution to CAP’s antipoverty efforts.
Janet’s favorite places were the North Carolina coast and Door County, WI. Over the 57 years she lived in WI, she visited Door County at least once a year—making sure to enjoy a boat ride, a fish boil, and many cherry baked goods. She also enjoyed the symphony and other theatre productions.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents, her in-laws, two brothers-in-law, and Ken. She is survived by her daughter, Victoria. When Vicki met Rod in 2001, and they married in 2003, Janet became connected to her “California Family” including grandchildren Katy (Christian) of Santa Cruz, Jonathan (Brooke) of Oakland, and great-grandchildren Ayden and Zoe of Santa Cruz.
Janet is also survived by her two sisters—Kathy (Wally) and Sharon, and by her brother-in-law, Bud (Jan), and sister-in-law, Chris. She loved her many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews as well. Janet will be missed by all—most especially by her daughter, and her two closest friends, Theresa, and Rick.
A private Celebration of Life service will take place at a later date. If you would like to remember Janet with a monetary gift, please donate to Cap Services, Inc using this link:
