Hildegard K. Bauhs, 106, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2026 in Danville, California, and will now join her loving husband, John Bauhs, and so many friends and relatives in Heaven.
Born Hildegard Johanna Mathilda Krueger on February 19, 1920 in Buetow, Pomerania, Germany. Hildegard immigrated to America with her parents, Emil Otto Krueger and Emma Augusta (Meseck) Krueger, arriving in New York harbor on Christmas Eve, 1924, where they passed through Ellis Island in the following days.
The family located initially to a farm in Black Creek, Wisconsin before eventually moving to Appleton. Hildegard became a US citizen five years later when her parents became naturalized citizens. She graduated from Appleton High School in 1937 and immediately began working in the office of the Appleton Superintendent of Schools. After 13 years with the school district, she worked for the next 23 years for Secura. Hildegard married John Albert Bauhs on May 17, 1947 and enjoyed a loving relationship until John passed away in 2010.
Hildegard loved to read and claimed to have read most of the books in the Appleton Public Library when she was young. Hildegard also enjoyed sewing, playing bridge, drawing, painting watercolors, and gardening. She loved children and taught Sunday School, mostly to Kindergartners, for 64 years.
Hildegard was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, the Paper Valley Garden Club, the Appleton Art Center, and the Appleton Women’s Club.
Hildegard was predeceased by her parents and her husband, John Albert Bauhs.
She is survived by her daughter, Joan Rudolph, Danville, California, son John Bauhs and his wife Michele Burlew of North Oaks, Minnesota, and son Thomas Bauhs and his wife Teri of Danville, California, and grandsons Scott Bauhs and his wife Amanda and their children Ethan and Ellie of San Luis Obispo, California and Mark Bauhs and his wife Julie and their children Emma and Ryan of Danville, California. Hildegard is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 2330 E. Calumet Street, Appleton, at 11:00 on Wednesday, July 8. Visitation with family and friends will preceed the service at 10:00. The family invite all present to share in a luncheon at the church immediately following the service. A private family inurnment will take place at Appleton Highland Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church or the charity of the donor’s choice.
