Harland W. Shorey

November 13, 1933 — December 29, 2023

Appleton

Harland Wayne Shorey, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away in Appleton, WI on December 29, 2023. He was born on November 13, 1933 in McCook, Nebraska to his loving parents Gerald and Agnes (High) Shorey.

Harland led a remarkable life filled with love, dedication, and achievement. After completing his education, Harland joined the United States Coast Guard where he was honored with the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal for his exemplary service to his country.

Harland was joined in marriage to the love of his life, Shirley Deanna Appenzeller, on June 1, 1956 in Lakewood, CO. They shared a beautiful journey together for over 67+ years. Their love and commitment to one another served as an inspiration to those who had the privilege of knowing them.

Harland began working in test equipment engineering on the Titan Missile Program with Martin Marietta, following his military service. His adventurous nature moved the family to many parts of the country, before they settled in Appleton on October 31, 1970, calling it home ever since. Harland enjoyed a successful career as Plant Manager and then project manager with Industrial Towel and Uniform (ITU).

Harland showcased his dedication and talent with an impressive hole-in-one on the golf course and bowling a perfect 300 game, accomplishing both after the age of 70 years old. He had a great passion for music and dancing, which led him to an extensive collection of record albums over the years. He loved exploring new places through many grand travels he experienced with Shirley and his family, keeping track of the places he had visited both in literary and physical journeys he embarked upon.

Harland Wayne Shorey will be deeply missed by his surviving family members: his wife Shirley, his children Scott (Marcia W.) Shorey, Lori (Chris) Schneider, Bret Shorey, Julie (Todd) Hahnemann, Patricia (Todd) Van Handel; 7 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his loving sister Joyce Piz, sisters-in-law Cathy (Glen) Washburn and Willa Rose, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Harland is preceded in death by his father Gerald, mother Agnes, brother Darwin Shorey, and sister Joann Montgomery.
