Gladys A. Buxton, age 90, was unexpectedly called to her Savior's side on Monday night, July 28, 2008. Gladys was born in Appleton on December 1, 1917, daughter of the late Otto and Laura (Mueller) Schmit. On November 26, 1936, she married Richard “Dick” Buxton; he preceded her in death on August 11, 1999.
Gladys loved her Lord and was committed to daily prayer, devotion, and scripture reading. She supported many religious organizations over the years, but was always driven to worship, meditate, and pray. She loved nature, and all of God's creatures, both the great and the small. She and Dick enjoyed spending time at their “retreat” on Big Twin Lake near Phelps, where she marveled at the stars in the sky, the trees of the forest, and the grains of sand at the beach. She maintained a large garden, and was well known by her family for her canning, cooking, and baking expertise. Little came from Gladys' kitchen that you didn't want to eat too much of! Many will remember her skill at playing cards – she was always a formidable opponent in a cribbage game. She enjoyed reading, caring for her orchids, and the company of the family dog, Tera.
Gladys is survived by two sons: Tom (Sue) Buxton of Appleton and Dickie Buxton of Neenah who is mentally challenged, and to whom Gladys was always loving, dedicated, and loyal. There are two grandchildren: Paul (Dawn) Buxton of Marion and Leigh Ann Buxton of Appleton; a great-granddaughter: Renee Buxton; a sister-in-law: Caroline Comella of Appleton, as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brothers Robert (Margaret) Schmit and Ken (Jane) Schmit; and a sister: Virginia (Bob) Vander Velden.
A memorial service to celebrate the Lord's gift of Gladys to us will be held at 5:00 PM on Friday, August 1, 2008 at the funeral home chapel, with Rev. Leon Knitt and Rev. Jim Rademaker officia ting. Inurnment will be at Highland Memorial Park at a later date. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday afternoon from 3:00 PM until the hour of the service.
The family would like to offer a special thank you to the many people who cared for Gladys. They include Sue Buxton and Gladys Mae Friesen for their years of love and devotion as well as to Stella and Roger Wood for the several months of kindness and concern they poured out to her. Your compassion and love will never be forgotten. Thank you so very much.
