George Esler, 87, Kaukauna, passed away on Saturday April 10, 2010 at Cherry Meadows Hospice in Appleton. George was born on March 18, 1923, in Kaukauna, son of the late Nicholas and Alfa (Deno) Esler. He served in the United States Navy from 1942 until 1946. On August 31, 1948, he married the former Mary “Betty” Hassman. For many years, George worked for Wisconsin Bell / AT&T and as a photographer for United Press International and WBAY-TV in Green Bay. George enjoyed photography, trains, boating, flying kites with his grandchildren and amateur radio(i.e. W9MSJ).
George is survived by two daughters: Mary Ann (James) Nachtwey of Bourbonnais, Illinois and Maureen (Steve) Ulwelling of Little Chute; three grandchildren: Emily (Josh) McBroom of Naperville, Illinois, Benjamin Nachtwey of Lisle, Illinois, and Eric Ulwelling of Little Chute; two great grandchildren Samuel and Jackson McBroom. George is also survived by two sisters: Vera (Henry) Juckem of Hilbert and Sr. Mary Christopher (Carol) of Fond du Lac. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Betty in 2006.
The funeral liturgy for George will be held at 11:30 AM on Friday, April 16, 2010 at ST. PIUS X CATHOLIC CHURCH, 500 W. Marquette Street in Appleton with Fr. Thomas Farrell officiating. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery, Little Chute. Full military honors will be presented. Friends may call at the church on Friday morning from 10:30 AM until the hour of the liturgy.
