Floyd Otto, 100: Owned a Model T and an iPhone and Outlasted Both Warranties

Floyd Otto died Sunday, September 13, 2026, in Cape Coral, Florida, at 100, after a life well lived and much ice cream enjoyed.

Floyd grew up in Shawano, Wisconsin, a close-knit town so small that everyone drank at the same bar, including the doctor. The doctor would kick your barstool with a smile, just to let you know he was counting.

When his brother Junior died before World War II, Floyd and his wife, Marian, a numbers whiz and bookkeeper, found themselves back on his parents' farm, milking cows. Floyd could diagnose any machine by its groans and purrs, which led him to a car dealership and later a career making paper. It made him the coolest grandpa around, with endless construction paper for the grandkids.

He was proudest of his daughter, Brenda, as smart as a whip and as pretty as her mom. His grandchildren returned the favor by looking after Marian and Floyd, who lived independently until 96 and 98.

Floyd was known for two things: his sweepstakes luck and never passing up dessert. Who needs Boost when there's chocolate ice cream? He watched the world go from horses to smartphones, and he'd want you to know change is normal and you'll get through it, just like the generations before you. Keep your friends and the right attitude.

He is survived by his wife, Marian; his daughter, Brenda, and her husband, Paul; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and extended family, including Charley the barber, his two children, and their families. 

In lieu of flowers, please eat an ice cream cone in his honor.
