Floyd was born on January 30, 1930 in Rochelle, IL to Percy and Iola (Allen) Loomis. His youth was spent in Wyocena, WI where he enjoyed childhood adventures with his long-standing buddy, LaVerne Griffin. Floyd was active in sports and music in Portage where he graduated in 1948. At age 18, his parents welcomed their second child Gene, who remained close with Floyd despite their age difference. Being a talented multi-sport athlete and saxophone player prepared him for future activities such as bicycling, golf, and participation in community church bands and choirs.

After his 4 year US Navy career in the Korean Conflict, he married the love of his life, Dorothy (Cowles) Loomis on January 22, 1955, and they settled in Madison, WI. He worked for CUNA Mutual Insurance company and continued to be active in extracurricular activities. He participated in barbershop and church choirs, and was a Boy Scout Troop Leader, helping youth to enjoy the natural beauty of Wisconsin and gain confidence in their abilities.

Floyd then pursued his life-long dream to teach others, and earned his BA degree in Education from UW Whitewater, and later his MBA from UW Oshkosh. He and Dorothy moved to Green Bay in 1971 where he taught Accounting at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College for 21 years.

Raising a family of 4 children (within 5 years!), he and Dorothy exposed them to a variety of life opportunities including camping, traveling, fishing, hunting, and music. They sailed the waters of Green Bay and Lake Michigan and continued to remain active in community events.

Upon retirement, they moved back to Portage, WI and were involved in the Methodist church and Saddle Ridge Golf Club. Floyd continued to be an active cyclist and played in the local community band. He and Dorothy traveled in their motorhome throughout Florida and Texas.

His last 5 years were spent at Touchmark in Appleton, WI where he remained in good health until his death just 3 months shy of age 96.

A Celebration of Floyd’s Life was held on November 1, 2025 in the Touchmark facility, led by family and attended by many whose lives were touched by his presence and personality.

Floyd will be buried in the Wyocena,WI cemetery at a later date with full military honors. He is remembered by his sense of humor, family commitment, and teaching of life through leadership.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, and children: Robert (Debbie), Cathy Gruninger (Greg), Carrie Vellella (Rob), Paul (Karyl), and brother Gene. Floyd and Dorothy have 10 grandchildren (Krista Olson (Timothy), Brian Loomis (Kristen), Amber Williams (Zach), Kim Walls (Jeremy), Molly Gruninger (Justin), Tara Vellella (Kelly), Matt Vellella (Jessica), Samantha Curtis (Aaron), Adam Loomis, and Benjamin Loomis.
