Florence E. Horn

October 25, 1922 — April 2, 2009

Florence Horn, age 86, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday evening, April 2, 2009. Florence was born on October 25, 1922, daughter of the late Jacob and Catherine (Peeters) Gerrits, and on January 6, 1944 married Norbert “Bud” Horn. Bud preceded her in death on March 4, 1983. For some twenty years, Florence was employed as a department supervisor for Campbell's in Appleton, and she retired from the Institute of Paper Chemistry after working there for twenty years. She was generous with her time, volunteering for St. Elizabeth Hospital, St. Bernadette Parish, and was also a member of the Darboy Post #256 of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Florence leaves wonderful memories for her family to cherish: she was the best SCRABBLE player ever and never seemed to run out of two letter words. She had a very sharp mind, and enjoyed games of all kinds, playing cards, bingo, and crossword puzzles. She was also an excellent cook, and all will fondly remember her famous chili or the special melting moments cookies she baked.

She is survived by two daughters: Julaine “Julie” McMillan of Appleton and her special friend Leigh A. “Augie” Wachel; and Cheryl “Sheri” (Bill) Weyenberg of Green Bay; four grandchildren: Jody Landers of Green Bay and his fiancée Jackie Rockwell; Jayme Landers of Chicago and her special friend Brian Kelly; Todd (Deanna) Weyenberg of Green Bay; and Jennifer (Marcus) Smith of Grayslake, Illinois.

Her six great-grandchildren were the loves of her life: Travis Vervoren, Cortlyn Kelly, Kelsey Weyenberg, Grace Weyenberg, Connor Smith, and Caden Smith.

Florence also has three sisters: Julia Pankratz of Darboy; Grace Vander Heiden of Kimberly; and Dorothy Kruckeberg of Appleton; two brothers: Gordon Gerrits of Appleton and Marvin (Mary) Gerrits of Black Creek. She is also survived by Bud's sisters: Lucille Davidson of Menasha; Shirley (James) Ciske of Appleton; and Sharon (Richard) Schierl of Menasha. Florence was preceded in death by her parents, Jake and Catherine Gerrits, her husband Bud, sisters Bernice (Levi) Kern, Joan Werner, and Evelyn Gerrits; brothers-in-law Jerome Pankratz, John Vander Heiden, Donald Kruckeberg, Norman (Marion) Horn, and Charles Davidson; a sister-in-law Audrey Gerrits; and by Bud's parents, Fred and Emma Horn.

The funeral liturgy for Florence will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, April 6, 2009 at ST. BERNADETTE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2331 E. Lourdes Drive in Appleton with Fr. Donald Zuleger officiating. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM and again at the church on Monday morning after 10:00 AM.
