Eunice DeGroot, age 90, passed away at St. Paul Home in Kaukauna on Friday, September 4, 2009. Eunice was born in Kaukauna on June 12, 1919, daughter of the late Ernest and Antoinette (Giesbers) Modl. She graduated from the Outagamie County Teachers College and the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh where she received her degree in elementary education. During her career she taught at Necedah, St. John's in Little Chute, Cherry Hill in Seymour, Chappell School in Green Bay, and St. Mary's in Appleton. She loved polka music, dancing, traveling, stock car racing, sponsoring baton twirling contests, and being involved in family activities. Eunice married Francis “Mick” DeGroot on January 3, 1941 at Holy Cross Church in Kaukauna. He preceded her in death in 2004.
Eunice is survived by her sister: Lucille (Gerald) Engel; two sons: Eugene (Jean) and David (Lauren); twelve grandchildren: Robert (Jessie), Sharon ( Ben) Ross, Jeffrey (Angie), Mary (friend David), James (friend Lorraine), Kenneth (Michelle), Sue (Howard) Feldkamp, Michael (Traci), Thomas, William (Tracy), and Valerie (Steve) Edge; sixteen great-grandchildren, three step-great- grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a brother Marvin, and sisters Mildred Hauser Gracyalny and Lorraine (Lloyd) Krueger, and a grandson Michael J. deGroot.
The funeral liturgy will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 9, 2009, at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street, Kaukauna, with Fr. Tom Pomeroy officiating. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday morning from 9:00 AM until the hour of the service. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Kaukauna. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for St. Paul Home in Kaukauna, where Eunice has resided the past nine and a half years.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the many caregivers at St. Paul Home who looked after Eunice, and special thanks also to Donna Wegner, Carla Frelich, and Lucille Engel. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
