Gene “Maj” Schelfhout, age 95, of Kimberly, passed away with his daughters beside him on Wednesday May 10, 2023. Gene was born December 29, 1927, to the late Edmund and Anna (Bloch) Schelfhout. Gene proudly served his country in WWII as a United States Marine Sgt. from 1945 to 1946, and in the Korean War from 1950 to 1952.
When returning home from his duties, he continued serving the community of Kimberly as a Postal Carrier for 25 years , then advancing up the ladder to serving as the Post Master for 10 years.
He loved his politics, so he decided to throw his hat in the ring and run for Village President, which he held the position of for several years. His community and county involvement didn’t end there, he then served on the Kimberly Village Board, School Board and also served on the Outagamie County Board of Trustees for several years. He was a proud lifelong member of Kimberly Legion Post 60 and also the Color Guard.
He enjoyed reminiscing with family and friends, his travels through Elderhostel, meeting new folks along the way, whom he’d talk to for hours on end, and his weekly get together with his card playing buddies.
Gene is survived by his daughters: Jeanne (Mark) Van Straten and Terri (“Big Jack”) Gerrits, his son Todd Schelfhout; grandchildren: Tammy (Timm) Cloutier, Nicci (Fred) Sprangers, Ryan (Rebecca) Giordana, Ben Surin, Jasen (Stephanie) Surin, Kelsey Coenen, and Joely Schelfhout; great-grandchildren Paige (Special friend Stephen Erickson), Brett Sprangers, Brady Sprangers, Kaden Surin, Brantley Surin, Rowen Giordana and Reece Giordana; a great-great-grandson Ryder Erickson; brothers Donald Schelfhout, James (Arlene) Schelfhout, and Joseph (Sue) Schelfhout.
In addition to his parents, Gene is preceded in death by his stepmother Hilda (Hafeman) Schelfhout, Genes former wife (children’s mother) Marlene Enders, Evelyn Hafeman and Maxine Jett, his daughter Vicki Giordana, sisters Rose (Gerald) Reetz, Anna Marie Martin, Lorraine (Gary) Roepcke, a brother Richard Schelfhout, and a sister-in-law Gloria Schelfhout.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday May 20, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Fargo Funeral Home, located at 400 W. Wisconsin Avenue in Kaukauna. A visitation will start at begin at 9:00 AM and continue until time of service. He will be laid to rest and receive military honors at Holy Cross Cemetery following the service.
