Ellen "Ellie" Jo Helms unexpectedly passed away at her home late last week from natural causes. Ellie was born on May 15, 1952 to Edward and Clarice (Kobs) Van Cuyk in Appleton, Wisconsin. She graduated from Kimberly High School and resided in many places including Kittery, Maine; Shawano, Wisconsin; and finally in Kaukauna, Wisconsin. Ellie worked in the restaurant industry for most of her life - the majority of that time was spent as a manager at Pizza Hut and Arby's. Along with her strong work ethic, she also blessed her customers and coworkers with endless smiles, laughter, and lots of spunk for which they are forever grateful. Ellie had been married twice in her lifetime and, despite never finding her Prince Charming, she was still able to meet the love of her life during her first marriage with the birth of her son, John.
Ellie had many simple joys in life, like caring for her hundreds of plants, shopping, and walking with her friends. She found her peace in the quietness of her beautifully kept home or while enjoying a good book. By far, her greatest joy was found in spending time with her Grandsons, Evan and William. She was the Grandma that always showed up for "her boys", and there was nothing she would not do for them. She always supported them and whichever dream (or girl) they were chasing at the time. She was the loudest fan in the stands, the maker of "whacky mac" and the giver of gifts on the sly when Mom and Dad said no. Her heart was filled with love for her family and friends, and truly, that is what made it beat. She made an impact on many lives and she will be greatly missed.
Ellie is preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Clarice Van Cuyk; and her sister, Nancy. She is survived by her son, John (Amy) Habeck; her Grandsons, Evan and William; as well as many other extended family members and countless friends and coworkers.
There are no words that can express how grateful and blessed we are to Ellie's neighbor, Sandy, who opened her door to us when we first heard of Ellie's passing. Also, a heartfelt thank you to the EMTs, Firefighters, and Police and all who helped us through a very difficult situation.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Thank you for all your prayers and support during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, condolences or donations for the gathering may be sent to Ellen's family in care of Wichmann Funeral Home, 537 North Superior Street, Appleton, WI 54911, which will promptly be sent to John and Amy.
