Dorothy Jane McVey

September 8, 1935 — September 4, 2025

Appleton

On September 4, 2025, the Lord reached out His hand to Dorothy Jane McVey and said, “Come to me.” She was born on September 8, 1935, to the late Frederick and Margaret (Missling) Huebner. She grew up on the family farm in Hortonville with her siblings. She learned how to keep a home from her mom and her older sisters.

Following high school, Dorothy was working at AAL (in the old downtown building). She was introduced to James McVey through a mutual friend. They married on June 2, 1956, raised their family in Appleton and were married for 61 years.

Dorothy’s gift of homemaking truly showed in the fall season. She was an excellent cook and baker, and those things were truly her love language to her family. She spent hours canning and freezing fruits and vegetables in preparation for the cold winter months. Commitment to their faith community was important to both Dorothy and James, and no matter their locale, they shared their talents in various ways. Dorothy volunteered in the altar guild, funeral meal preparation and always found ways to contribute. Dorothy loved to Jitterbug and relished any opportunity to dance at family gatherings and celebrations. In addition, Dorothy enjoyed traveling with James and doing crossword puzzles.

Dorothy is survived by her children: Todd (Laurie Lutz) McVey, Sue (Steve) Ring, Lisa (Russ) Bellford; 8 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. She is further survived by her brother Robert (Arlene) Huebner; sister-in-law Carol Huebner as well other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband James, her parents, great granddaughter Elise Ring; siblings: Donald Huebner, Marcella (Erwin) Grosnick, Elleanor (Donald) Zimmer, Alice (George “Bill”) Kuehnel, Fred Huebner, and Harold (Mary) Huebner, Gladys Huebner and another infant sister. She is further preceded by James’ parents Earl and Jennie McVey and his sister Ileen (Jerome) Van De Walle.

A memorial service for Dorothy will take place on Friday September 12, 2025, at 11:00am at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2220 E College Ave, Appleton. Friends and family may gather at the church from 9:30am until the service begins. Dorothy will be entombed at Wisconsin Memorial Park, Milwaukee.
