IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dorothy E.
Loomis
February 26, 1930 – March 17, 2026
Celebration of Life
Dorothy was born on February 26, 1930 in Portage, WI. to Bennett and Ida Cowles (Hendrikson). She was the second of three daughters, with sisters Norma Armson and Lucille Rosenthal. She was an honor roll student and involved in music and volleyball at Portage High School, where she graduated in 1948. She married Floyd G. Loomis on January 22, 1955 and went on to raise 4 children in Madison, WI.
In Madison, Dorothy worked for the Speech Department at UW-Madison, was active at Monona United Methodist Church, and helped with her children’s Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops. She enjoyed cooking, church choir, playing bridge, and organizing family camping trips to several state parks in WI. She enjoyed golfing and loved sewing, knitting, and crocheting.
Dorothy and Floyd moved to Green Bay in 1971, where she did secretarial work, was involved at St. Paul United Methodist Church, and sailed the waters of Green Bay and Lake Michigan with Floyd. She also attended virtually every sporting, musical, and theatrical event of her children. She and Floyd shared their love of the outdoors with their children and grandchildren, never turning down an opportunity to camp, fish, ski, or hike.
Upon retirement Floyd and Dorothy moved back to where they were high school sweethearts; Portage, WI. They spent their time golfing at Saddle Ridge, and ventured in their motorhome throughout Florida, Texas, and the Gulf Coast. They traveled to Alaska, Hawaii, Norway, and the Caribbean. Dorothy’s last 5 years were spent at Touchmark Assisted Living in Appleton, WI. where she was loved by all the residents and staff.
Dorothy’s greatest gift was her ever present smile and interest in friendly conversation. She loved people and had the ability to make friends with strangers wherever she was. Her love of Floyd and her family was unwavering and her positive outlook on life was contagious. She is dearly missed by all, but her legacy lives on through the lives she touched.
Survivors include her 4 children: Robert (Debbie), Cathy Gruninger (Gregory), Carrie Vellella (Robert), Paul (Karyl) and brother-in-law, Gene Loomis. Her 10 grandchildren are: Krista Olson (Timothy), Brian Loomis (Kristen), Amber Williams (Zach), Kim Walls (Jeremy), Molly Gruninger (Justin), Tara Vellella (Kelly), Matt Vellella (Jessica), Samantha Curtis (Aaron), Adam Loomis and Benjamin Loomis. Dorothy also has 14 great grandchildren: Tristan, Kai, Esmeray, Shai, Riley, Harper, Nora, Emmett, Piper, Sierra, Wilder, Kira, Margot, and Poppy.
Dorothy’s celebration of life service will be held on May 2nd, 9-11 a.m. at Touchmark Assisted Living in Appleton, WI. Burial will follow that afternoon at Wyocena Cemetery, Wyocena, WI.
