Age 75, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, at Appleton Medical Center as a result of renal failure due to Amyloidosis. He was born in Appleton on December 19, 1933 the son of the late Lester and Ruth (Holz) Peters. Don was baptized and confirmed at Center Emmanuel Evangelical United Brethren Church. He graduated from Hortonville High School in 1952. On September 4, 1954 he married his wife of 54 years, Doris Emanuel. Don worked for several years at Fox Tractor and then spent 37 years at Wisconsin Telephone, retiring in 1991. Don served as a radio operator in the 32nd Division of the Wisconsin National Guard. He served as a member and volunteer of the AT&T Telecom Pioneers and member of the First United Methodist Church, Appleton. He loved NASCAR. Don was an avid automobile enthusiast whose knowledge and advice will be greatly missed. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Don is survived by his loving wife, Doris; children: DiAnn (Bil) Sutlief of New London, Greg Peters of St. Paul, MN, and Cheryl (Tim) Harke of Green Bay; grandchildren: Sara (fiancé, Tim Cook) Sutlief, Katelyn Sutlief, Lee Peters, Adrienne Peters, Amanda Harke, and Tyler Harke; brothers: Harold (Vera) Peters of Camp Verde, AZ and Eugene (Barbara) Peters of Troy, MI; sister, Shirley (Jim) Larget of Hortonville; special friend, Nick Little of Clintonville. He is further survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, as well as many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 3, 2009 at FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 325 E. Franklin St., Appleton, with Dr. Doyle Blanton officiating. Friends will be received at the Wichmann Funeral Home on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
The family extends a special thank you to: Dr. Alan Bryce, hematologist, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN; Dr. John Barkmeier, ThedaCare Physicians; Dr. Michael Gitter, Cardiology Associates; Dr. David Koeper, Fox Valley Nephrology; all the staff at each office/lab; and the nurses at AMC, especially Katrina in ICU.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that memorials be made to “Mayo Clinic Amyloidosis Research Fund.”
