Don Weir, age 88, passed away on October 23, 2023, at The Residence in Oshkosh. He was born in Ontonagon, Michigan on May 24, 1935, son of the late Dan E. and Mabel (Scharf) Weir. Don was a 1954 graduate of Hibbing Minnesota High School where he lettered in football, hockey, baseball and track. He attended Hibbing Junior College for two years where he excelled in football and basketball.
Don served in the United States Navy from 1956 until 1958 and continued in the Navel Reserve until 1962. On August 17, 1963, he married his love Barbara Matyas; she passed suddenly in January of 2006.
He attended Brown Broadcasting Institute in Minneapolis which launched his career in radio. He worked at various capacities at radio stations in Kansas, North Dakota, Minnesota, Arizona, Oregon, South Dakota, Iowa and Wisconsin until his retirement in 1994.
He is survived by three children: Daniel K. Weir, David Weir, Debbie (Dan) Corcoran. His grandchildren are Marissa (Steve) Schroeder, and their daughters Natalie and Elise; Daniel J. Weir; Nicole Corcoran and her children Maquel, Destinee, and Jory; Jason (Skylene) Popp and their children Trenton, Blake, and Hawk; Terence Corcoran and his children Keegan and Ryleigh; and Calleen Corcoran. Other survivors include special nieces Peggy Melgaard and Betsy Melgaard Pesko, and along with other nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, wife Barb, a sister Gloria (Dr. Robert) Melgaard, and brothers William Weir and Robert Weir.
A prayer service to honor Don’s memory will be held at 7:00 PM on Thursday, November 2, 2023, at the Wichmann Funeral Home, located at 537 N. Superior Street, in Appleton. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4:00 PM until the time of service. Don will be placed at rest at Riverside Cemetery at a later date.
The family would like to offer their sincere thanks to everyone at Hartland Hospice, Lakeland Care, and the caregivers at The Residence of Oshkosh (The Waterford). You are all special angels, and we will never forget your kindness.
