Delores J. Volkman

By the grace of God and the death and resurrection of His Son Jesus Christ, Delores Volkman was welcomed into heaven on Tuesday, December 26, 2023.

Delores was born to Hans and Minna (Hirte) Zuberbier on August 5, 1928 in the town of Wolf River. After graduating from Weyauwega High School she moved to Appleton, where she met Carl Volkman. They were married on May 6, 1950. Together they raised four sons; he preceded her in death on July 28, 1978.

 

Delores worked for several employers over the years, including Kimberly-Clark, AAL (now Thrivent), and Miller Electric. She retired from American Family Insurance in 1993. Her greatest joy in retirement was spending time with her grandchildren.

 

A long-time member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Appleton, Delores sang in the church choir for the better part of fifty years. She and Carl furthered their sons’ spiritual growth by enrolling them at Fox Valley Lutheran High School. She enjoyed bowling and gardening, and hosted Christmas Eve gift openings for the whole family until the past few years. Her “scrabble” Chex mix and angel food candy were family favorites!

 

Delores is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law: David (Special friend Beth Grayson), James (Susan), John, and Todd (Sue); nine grandchildren: Benjamin (Shannon) Volkman, Erin (Nick) Barile, Jordan (Sarah) Volkman, Michael (Leah) Volkman, Kimberly (Mike) Fredericks, Brittany (Jon) Piontek, Ashley Volkman, Lauren (Sawyer) Thorne, and Rachel Volkman; eleven great-grandchildren: Jaxson Volkman, Keaghan Volkman, Madison Barile, Kennedy Barile, Lilyana Volkman, Gracie Volkman, Quentin Fredericks, Brayden Piontek, Kade Volkman, Miles Piontek, and Ivy Volkman; and a sister-in-law, Vera Zuberbier.

 

In addition to her husband and parents, Delores was preceded in death by her siblings and in-laws: Orville Zuberbier, Lorraine (Alvin) Clifton, and Phyllis (Gary) Nelson; also Arnold & Marge Volkman, Ruth and Howard Gehrke, and Waldemar and Elaine Volkman.

 

The family would like to acknowledge and thank the staffs at Primrose Retirement Community and Moments Hospice for their care of Delores over the past year.

 

A Christian funeral service will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church in Appleton on Saturday, January 6, at 11:00am; visitation is at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial gift to either Bethany Lutheran Church or Fox Valley Lutheran High School.
