Cyril J. "Cy" Loughrin

February 9, 1927 — February 24, 2011

LOUGHRIN, CYRIL J.

Cyril J. Loughrin, of Oregon, formerly of Appleton and Darboy, passed away after a long and courageous fight with amyloidosis on Thursday, February 24, 2011 at St. Mary's Care Center in Madison. He was born on February 9, 1927 in the Town of Lebanon, the son of the late Joseph and Anna (Bricco) Loughrin. Raised on a small farm in the Town of Lebanon, Cyril was a hard working young man who recalled farm chores, times spent with his sisters and brother and being a good student and athlete. He played baseball and ran track at New London High School. Cy also fondly recalled his mother's reputation as a great cook and his father's determination while plowing the fields with a 2-horse drawn tiller pulled by the draft horses King and Queen. After high school Cy and his family moved to Clintonville, where he worked briefly at the Four Wheel Drive prior to joining the Navy where he served on the USS Dayton. Cy recalled training in Biloxi and Guantanamo Bay and his many voyages primarily as part of the Atlantic Fleet. He also had memories and photographs of military leave in such cities as Chicago, Washington DC, New Orleans and New York City. While in the Navy, Cy earned the Victory Ribbon and the American Area Ribbon.

After Cy's military service, he returned to Clintonville and went to work for Clintonville Trucking and Transfer. Clintonville Trucking moved Cy to their Appleton office. While in Appleton he met the lovely Ione Goehler at the Badger Bar. According to Cy, she pursued him and he gladly accepted. They were married on April 15, 1953 and last year celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. Cy was very proud of his family and he and Ione attended many family reunions, weddings and holiday get togethers. Cy enjoyed traveling and was fond of Sunday drives, trips to Milwaukee Braves games and later in life vacations to Florida, Ireland and Italy. Cy was a clerk for Clintonville Trucking and for CW Transport. In his mid-40's, Cy went back to school to earn a degree from Fox Valley Technical Institute which landed him a job at Neenah Foundry Company. Cy worked at Neenah Foundry for nearly 20 years and achieved the title of Commercial Traffic Manager. He was very proud of his work and of his department.

Cy loved his wife Ione and their life together. He was active in his church, the Fox Valley Traffic Club, Delta Nu Alpha and was a life member of the Neenah Council 5514 Knights of Columbus. Cy was a Little League coach and encouraged his children and grandchildren to be active, to do well in school and to keep the family together. He was an avid golfer and played as often as he could particularly in his later years. Cy had a winning smile and a firm handshake and he always looked you in the eye and said “Be Good”. We can all hope to follow that example.

Cyril is survived by his wife: Ione R. Loughrin; children: Peter C. (Debbie) Loughrin; Sandy A. (George) Currie; Sharon F. (Daniel) Haak and Paul J. Loughrin; grandchildren: Jason (Elizabeth) Loughrin, Beth (Jeff) Rauch, Ryan Loughrin, Emily (Zenon) Kochan and Sara (Joel) Marshall; Stephanie (Mike) Gentz, Andrew Haak and Natalie Haak; great-grandchildren: Ian and Patrick Loughrin; Brooke Rauch; Tai Loughrin; Kailey and Olivia Kochan; Makenzie Marshall; Addison and Braeden Gentz; brother: Cliff (Delores) Loughrin and brother-in-law: Leland Laux. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Cy was preceded in death by his sisters, Phyllis Laux and Elaine (George) Kort.

The funeral liturgy for Cyril will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at SACRED HEART CATHOLIC CHURCH, 222 E. Fremont Street, Appleton. Father Norm Krutzik will be officiating. Burial will take place at St. Patrick's Cemetery in the Town of Lebanon. The visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday from 9:00 am until the time of mass. Full military honors will follow.
