Chong-do Hah, esteemed Professor Emeritus of Government at Lawrence University, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2024 at the age of 96. He was born on November 24, 1927 in Koje, Korea to Chae-Kee Hah and Kyung-Soo Joo.
Professor Hah led a life marked by academic excellence, dedication to his family, and a passion for learning. Chong-do moved to the US in 1952 to continue his education. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Indiana University, his master’s degree at the University of Virginia, then his Ph.D. from Indiana University. He was recruited by Lawrence University, where he became a beloved professor and mentor in the government department.
His scholarly work, including influential studies on the Chinese Cultural Revolution, garnered widespread respect and recognition. Known for his intellectual rigor and expertise, he co-authored notable works including "Toward a Synthesis of Conflict and Integration Theories of Nationalism," which remains a significant contribution to the understanding of political modernization and national integration. Chong-do found deep professional satisfaction in mentoring students, keeping in touch with many for decades after graduation.
Known for his love of gardening and disdain for chipmunks, Chong-do relished the simple pleasures of life. He read the New York Times over kimchi soup and broccoli for breakfast, and his lullabies could put any baby to sleep. He enjoyed a good martini, fishing with Andrew, and spending time with his grandchildren. His devotion to his family and his work was unwavering, and he left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Chong-do's legacy of scholarship lives on through hundreds of former students around the world, and his legacy of kindness, warmth, and humor endures through his family. Chong-do will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and the many students whose lives he touched.
Chong-do was also a devoted family man. He was married to his first wife, Marie, for ten years, and for the last 50 years to Judy (Heding) Hah.
Chong-do is survived by his beloved wife Judy, children Kim, John, and Andrew (Kerri), grandchildren Portia, Tiana, and Marshall, niece Mary (Tracy Ayers) Moran and their children William and David Ayers-Moran and his nephew David (Pam) Moran and their children Jordan (Rachel Malloy) Moran and Andrew (Abby) Moran.
