Caroline Nieman, age 93, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, October 16, 2012 at St. Elizabeth Hospital. She was born in Florence, Wisconsin, on December 2, 1918, daughter of the late Carl and Mary (Taff) Sternhagen. In her early years, she worked as a housekeeper in Fern for Mrs. Bradley from Chicago. On May 6, 1950, she married Rudolph Nieman in Florence; he preceded her in death in 2007. Caroline was a longtime and faithful member of St. Matthew Ev. Lutheran Church in Appleton where she was active in the Ladies Aid, serving as president, vice president, and secretary over the years. Caroline enjoyed knitting wash cloths and other items, working crossword puzzles, and doing jigsaw puzzles.
She is survived by three children: Charlene (Roy) Beyer of Algoma; Debra (Richard) Brooker of Alabama; and Curtis Nieman of Appleton; ten grandchildren: Kim (Bret) Bollmeier, Eric (Megan) Beyer, Jason (Rachel) Beyer, Kevin (Yoshimi) Beyer, Andrew (Samantha) Brooker, Angela (Roy) Krueger, Brett (Carrie) Brooker, Joshua (Jackie) Nieman, Erica (Troy) Rodman, and Tamara Nieman; and eighteen great-grandchildren. Caroline was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers: William (Martha) Sternhagen, John (Dorothy) Sternhagen, and Darwin (Florence) Sternhagen; and by Rudy's siblings: Sheldon (Agnes) Nieman, Lusetta (Eldred) Tellock, and Audrey (Merlin) Kobussen.
The Christian Funeral for Caroline will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 19, 2012 at ST. MATTHEW EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH, with Rev. Paul T. Schuler officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call directly at the church on Friday morning from 9:00 AM until the time of the service.
