Bernetta A. DeBruin

July 28, 1918 — October 2, 2010

DeBruin, Bernetta Anna

Bernetta Anna DeBruin, 92, went home to her Savior and loving husband Ben on Saturday, October 2, 2010. Bernetta was born on her family farm in Sherwood on July 28, 1918 to the late Anton Schydzik and Rose Otto. Bernetta married her sweetheart, Martin “Ben” DeBruin, on July 26, 1938. They celebrated 64 loving years of marriage. Ben and Bernetta's pride and joy were their two sons, Robert (Rita) DeBruin (Kaukauna) and Dennis (Debbie) DeBruin (Harrison), and their three grandchildren: Beth (Mark) Specht (Sherwood), Tim (Sarah) DeBruin (Appleton), and Denise (Jay) Hatcher (Clermont, Florida). In July, Bernetta celebrated her 92nd birthday with her ten great grandchildren: Nicole and Ben Specht; Will, Tristan, Olivia, Emelyne, Wynnie and Isabel DeBruin; and Wyatt and Aspen Hatcher. Bernetta was survived by numerous nieces and nephews and a caring friend, Germaine McCabe. Bernetta was preceded in death by her husband Ben, her parents, her sister and brother-in-law (Grace and Bud Barker), her brother and sister-in-law (Ervin and Pearl Schydzik), and great-granddaughter Hannah DeBruin.

Bernetta graduated from Kaukauna High School and devoted her life to being a wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed Ben's garden, baking cookies, family holidays, deer camp, card games, cracking hickory nuts, watching the Brewers and Packers win or lose, and Super Bowl parties.

Bernetta “worked out” three days a week for fifteen years at AMC Rehab and took pride in caring for her own home all her life. She never missed a mass at St. Mary's, where she and Ben were life-long members. Every week, Grandma lit a candle for Ben and prayed she would see him soon. Grandma Bernetta's pfeffernusse cookies at Christmas, sugar cookies and birthday cards will be missed by her family.

A funeral mass for Bernetta will be held on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at ST. KATHARINE DREXEL PARISH, ST. MARY CHURCH (119 W. Seventh St. Kaukauna) at 11:00 AM with Fr. Jerry Pastors officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday from 9:00 AM until the time of services at the Church. The family would like to thank the AMC Rehab staff for years of loving care and fun for Bernetta. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
