Angela Marie Muller, age 90, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton, WI, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on February 14, 1935, in Minneapolis, MN, to Paul and Esther Mathews. Angie cherished her family deeply and spent her later years caring for her daughter Melanie, the light of her life.
Angie grew up in Owatonna, MN, where she graduated from Owatonna Public High School. After earning her degree from the College of St. Teresa in Winona, MN, she began a lifelong adventure of teaching and traveling. Her career took her from teaching elementary students in Minnesota to educating the children of U.S. service members in Panama and Germany, and eventually to classrooms in Oklahoma.
Angie had a lifelong passion for travel and, along with her close friends, explored much of Europe. Her home was surrounded by the treasures of her travels. While in Germany, she purchased a Renault Dauphine, traveled across Europe in it, packed it with her souvenirs, and shipped it back to the U.S. Years later, her children were delighted to discover audio recordings she had sent home to her parents as a way to stay in touch during her travels.
While teaching in Oklahoma, she met her future husband, Albert Muller, who was stationed at Fort Sill. Despite a first date that ended without a proper meal, Al won Angie over and their partnership was one for the ages. The couple married on May 25, 1963, in Exeter, California and built a life centered around faith, family, and love as they raised eight children together. Al’s passing in 2007 left a profound void in her heart.
Angie’s Catholic faith was at the heart of her life. She was deeply devoted, generously gave to those in need, warmly welcomed others, and lived out her beliefs through her everyday actions.
Angie’s family meant the world to her. She and Al had eight children, sharing wonderful family traditions that have been passed down. Her mother’s gooey rolls are baked for every family gathering and everyone knows how to play Spite and Malice, a card game that Angie played with all her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed watching the birds that gathered at her feeders just outside the front window and loved when her kids brought her new plants to plant either out front to welcome everyone or out in the backyard, where we would all sit around the fire on cool evenings.
Her youngest child, Melanie, held the dearest of places in Angie's heart. The two were one. Angie dedicated herself to making sure Melanie was cared for and supported. Family was so important for Angie and Al and the support system they leave behind for Melanie will ensure that care continues.
Angie's legacy is carried on by her beloved children: Chris (Lynne) Muller, Pat (Elaine) Muller, Katie Gaulrapp, Greg (Lori) Muller, Eric Muller, Heidi Muller (Daniel Boland), Anne Muller, and Melanie Muller. She reveled in the joy of being a grandmother, with her grandchildren Jessa Muller, Nathan Muller, Courtney (Bryce) Vining, Dakota Muller, Brody Muller, Brooklyn Muller, Kieran Boland, Connor Boland, Ryan Boland, and Xasha Lagunes and her great-grandchildren, Coda Vining and Peyton Vining. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
She is further survived by her sister, Marilyn (Joe) Ogas; brother, Bob (Janice Lonneman) Mathews; sisters-in-law, Joan Mathews and Mary Kimble; former son-in-law Alex Lagunes, and former sister-in-law, Jan Mathews. Her departed family members include her husband Albert Muller, parents Paul and Esther Mathews, her in-laws Albert and Mary Muller, her son-in-law Jeff Gaulrapp, her great-granddaughter Hope Marie Vining, brothers Paul (Jean) Mathews and James "Beaner" Mathews, and brothers-in-law John (Donna) Muller, Frank (Sandra) Muller, and Bob Kimble.
Angie will be remembered for her generous spirit, loving heart, and the way she tilted her head when she gave you her biggest smile.
Funeral services will take place on July 9, 2025, at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Appleton. Visitation starts at 9:00 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. Father Chris Raj will officiate. Angie will be laid to rest in St. Joseph Cemetery in Appleton at 2:00 p.m.
As we gather to honor Angie’s life, we celebrate a woman whose love knew no bounds, whose warmth enveloped all, and whose spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known her. She will be dearly missed.
The family appreciates your support and requests in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be directed to a memorial fund which is being established.
