Alice Smith, age 89, of Appleton, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at Rennes Health Center. She was born on July 20, 1922 in Appleton, the daughter of the late Carl and Mary (Young) Ulmen. Alice married the love of her life, Herbert “Red” Smith in 1947 and celebrated 48 years of devotion to each other. She retired from Tuttle Press/Art Fair after 44 years of employment. Alice ran the mill picnics and Christmas parties where many will remember Red and her as Mr. and Mrs. Santa. She was famous for the wonderful parties and family gatherings that she and Red had, especially her hat parties. Alice loved God, family and life. She was always there to help in anyway, whether you were family, friend or anyone in need. Although, she and Red never had children, she was a wonderful aunt and mother figure to many. Alice and Red spent many happy years at their cottage by Crooked Lake, and taking occasional trips. She loved crafts, cooking, baking, playing cards, and taking care of her flowers. Alice was a charter member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Appleton.
Alice is survived by her sister: Lucille Endter of Appleton; sister-in-law: Lois Hanagan of Kaukauna; twenty-eight nieces and nephews, along with many great and great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Smith; sisters: Dorothy (Lawrence) Kugler and Evie Westgor; brothers: Carlton (Cora) Ulmen and Floyd Ulmen; brothers-in-law: Howard Endter, Marvin (Gertrude) Roxberg, Cliff Hanagan, Donald Smith and Sonny Smith and three nephews.
