Age 79, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at Appleton Medical Center. Thomas was born on June 3, 1923, in Centerburg, Ohio, to the late H. Blinn and Daisy (Webster) Ramey. He married Pearl Mueller on June 26, 1943, in Tucson, Arizona. Thomas attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the Layton Art School. He proudly served his country as a Lt. Colonel in the United States Air Force. Thomas became a POW during WWII when the bomber he piloted was shot down during his 43rd mission. During his military career he was honored with 2 Distinguished Flying Crosses, 4 Air Medals, 2 Purple Hearts and 3 Presidential Citations. Thomas was a former president of the Appleton Rotary Club and a recipient of the Paul Harris Award. Survivors include Pearl, his wife of 59 years; his daughter, Jeanne (Jim) Ely, Midland, Michigan; his son Thomas (JoAnne) Ramey, Granger, Indiana; and his son Dan (Ala Mae) Ramey, Tucson, Arizona; his grandchildren, Teri Marie Valenzano, John Valenzano, Jeff Ramey, Jennifer Ramey, Daniel Ramey and Rebecca Ramey; his brother, H. Paul (Betty) Ramey, Lanham, Maryland; his sister-in-law Charlene Ramey, Columbus, Ohio; and his dear friends, Jim, Cindy, Becky, John, Ruth and D. W. Russler. He was preceded in death by his brother Emmett. Funeral services will be Thursday, April 10, 2003, at FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH, 601 East Glendale, Appleton, with Rev. Paul Brinkman officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. “Papo Tom” was a gardener extraordinaire, editor of the Cerignola Connection newsletter and co-editor of The History of the 455th Bomber Group. He enjoyed fishing and the time spent vacationing in Minocqua. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. A memorial has been established in his name. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at Appleton Medical Center for their loving care.
