Age 85, was called to her heavenly rest on Wednesday, September 26, 2001, at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Rose was born on August 17, 1916, in Maribel, Wisconsin to the late Paul and Hattie (Planert) Maas. She graduated from Appleton High School and received a bookkeeping degree from the Appleton School of Business. Rose worked as a bookkeeper for Schmitt-Orlow Clothing Stores in Appleton and Fond du Lac. During this time she met Connie Captain. With the breakout of WWII, Rose moved to Evanston, Illinois, to work in a defense plant manufacturing radios for fighter planes. After the war she remained in Chicago working as a bookkeeper. With her friends, Rose would return to Appleton for dances at the Cinderella Ballroom. Rose and Connie met again and were married on May 1, 1948; her husband of 51 years preceded her in death on April 3, 1999. She resumed her position with Schmitt-Orlow until the birth of her daughter Shirley. Rose was a charter member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Lydia Circle, was a past church council secretary, a member of Church Women United and was an aide at Vacation Bible Schools. She was also a secretary for the City of Appleton Memorial Day Committee for over 20 years; a Laubach reading tutor; a volunteer for the American Cancer Society; the American Lung Association; and was a poll official for elections. Rose was also a past president, secretary and treasurer and headed many national committees of the Woman’s Relief Corps, Auxiliary to the G.A.R.. She was also a volunteer office worker for VA Satellite, had a lifetime appointment to the May Luschinger Committee at the Wisconsin Veterans Administration Home, and was a representative at the Zablocki VA Hospital in Milwaukee. Rose was a member of Deborah Rebekah Lodge #13, Bay Verte #11, LAPM, Green Bay; Past State LAPM Association President and past/present LAPM Association secretary. She was presented with awards from the Governor’s Office, the Department of Veteran’s Affairs, Washington, D. C., Wisconsin Department of the VA, honored by the City of Appleton, the Decoration of Chivalry and the Meritorious Service Award. Survivors include her daughter, Shirley Mae Snyder, Waukegan, Illinois; her two grandsons, Adam and Andrew Snyder, Waukegan; her Nephews Richard Captain and Neil Maas of Appleton; and many other loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her six brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 13, 2001, at EMMANUEL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 740 East College Avenue, Appleton, with Rev. David Kalas and Rev. Lynn K. Kollath officiating. Friends may call at the church on Saturday, October 13, 2001, from 3:00 p.m. until the time of services. Interment will be at King Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in her name.
