Phyllis Jean Zimmerman

June 23, 1919 — December 10, 2013

Phyllis Jean Zimmerman, age 94, of Appleton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 10, 2013, at Appleton Health Care Center. Born June, 23 1919 in Orangeville, IL to Fern and Steven Likens. Phyllis grew up near Pecatonica, IL on the family farm where she took advantage of all the goodness a small town and country life could offer. She played with her chickens, cared for her sheep, rode her pony to school and joined 4H, winning blue ribbons for her prized sheep and her darning skills. Phyllis was a proud graduate of Pecatonica High School Class of 1937. On October 12, 1940 she married LaMar F. Zimmerman in Dubuque, IA. During their marriage they were blessed with two sons, Keith and Ray. The nature of LaMar's work allowed the family to relocate several times living in Illinois, Wisconsin, Florida, Indiana and back to Wisconsin again. Phyllis and LaMar had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary when LaMar passed away in 1991. Phyllis worked at First National Bank in Appleton, WI and retired from the Pinellas County School Board in Clearwater, FL. She was a volunteer at Appleton Medical Center Gift Shop until the young age of 84. Phyllis will be remembered as a devoted wife, a doting mother, a caregiver with the patience of Job, an impeccable housekeeper, a talented seamstress, a gloating grandmother, a duteous checkbook balancer (to the p-e-n-n-y!), a dedicated diary keeper (every day), the guardian of precious family heirlooms, an avid sports fan, and a fun and loyal friend to all. Her energy and spirits were always high. She never complained – she just rolled with the punches. Phyllis was a woman of sound principle and unwavering faith. She was a longtime member of St. James United Methodist Church, Appleton, WI.
Phyllis will be sadly missed by her two boys whom meant the world to her: Keith, Appleton, WI and Ray (Wanda), Smithville, OH. She will be lovingly remembered by her five grandchildren of whom she was so very proud of: Gay (James) Lemmers, Joy (Lee) St. John, Vicky (James) Albanese, LaMar (Yumin) Zimmerman and John (Ramona) Zimmerman and her ten great grandchildren whom she adored to the moon and back: Quinn and Lucy Lemmers, Isabelle St. John, Christopher and Kaitlin Albanese, Cal and Olivia Zimmerman and Raylee, Justice and Meghan Zimmerman. Her dear nephew: Richard (Mary) Zimmerman. She is survived by several special cousins and many, many wonderful friends.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband LaMar, parents Fern and Steven, sister and brother-in-law, Rachel and Glen Morrison, daughter-in-law Judy Zimmerman, nephew Max Morrison and LaMar's family: Mayme (Henry) Engleman, Thelma (Norman) Lansford and Arthur (Lula) Zimmerman.
Per Phyllis's wish, a private family memorial will be held.
The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude for the compassion and loving care from staff and volunteers at Appleton Health Care Center.
In lieu of flowers, any expressions of sympathy can be directed to St. James United Methodist Church of Appleton.
