Age 76, a loving and much loved husband and father, died on Monday, February 25, 2002 at home with his family. He struggled bravely for 37 years with multiple sclerosis and finally succumbed to complications of the disease along with lymphoma and pneumonia.
Paul was easygoing with a ready sense of humor, and loved telling stories about his adventures and experiences. He was a good listener and counsel, and very social and outgoing. He loved woodworking, creating practical gifts, the benefits of which his family still enjoy. He had a great attitude toward life: in spite of the debilitating effects of his MS, he always had a kind word to share and seldom complained. His was a generous soul, always willing to help others in need.
Paul was born in Newton Highlands, MA on 9/24/25 to William & Dorothea (Sullivan) Coveney. His beloved wife Joan (Hynes) Coveney, whom he married on May 10, 1952 survives him. He is also survived by a loving family including his three children and their families: Donna M. Coveney and her partner Rusty Free of Arlington, MA; Diane Coveney-Rutz and her husband Devon Rutz of Auckland, New Zealand; William Coveney and wife Mary Anne of Westboro, MA and their three children: Caitlin, Shannon and Meaghan; his nephew Richard M. Coveney and wife Nancy of Hyannis/Scituate, MA.
Paul graduated from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Hyannis, MA and Babson College in Wellesley, MA. Paul served as a Naval Officer attached to the Merchant Marines from 1943-1946.
He ran the East Coast Sales office for Zwicker Knitting Mills in New York City from 1965-1979 before relocating to Appleton and working at Zwicker Company Headquarters.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, February 28, 2002 at 11:00 am at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church with Father John Bergstadt officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday February 27 at the funeral home and again on Thursday one hour prior to the service. A memorial fund is being established. The family would like to express their gratitude to the Theda Care Home Staff, especially Suzi, Marie, Stephanie, Carol, Nancy and Charley and dear friend Peggy. We would also like to thank the staff of New London Family Medical Center and AMC for their care and compassion.
