Nancy Ann Maloney

April 10, 1956 — September 22, 2002

Nancy A. Maloney
Appleton, WI
A bright star, now eternal, shines in the clear September sky. Nancy A. Maloney, age 46, attained a state of perpetual grace on September 22, 2002. Her love for her family, for her close friends and for her little dog, Shorty, helped sustain her through a long illness.
Nancy was the beloved daughter of Patricia Maloney and the late Edward R. Maloney; and the adored sister of the late Mary Ellen Maloney, Appleton; Mark Maloney, Appleton; the late James (Christina) Maloney, Green Bay; Tim Maloney, Clearwater, FL; Jeff (Cindy)Maloney, Winneconne; Kim (Tony) Wolosek, Appleton; and Brian Maloney, Clearwater, FL. The cherished aunt of Jennifer, Zachary, Sabrina, Tim Jr., Nicole, Beau and Brianna, Nancy was also a dear friend to Jean Vanden Acker, Anne Biebel, Christina Maloney (her sister-in-law and longtime friend), Lynn Milo, Shirley Kastner, and Linda Gosse, along with many others too numerous to mention individually, including her aunts, uncles, cousins, former co-workers at Theda Clark Regional Medical Center in Appleton and Bellin in Green Bay, as well as the members of her Ovarian Cancer Support Group.
Nancy graduated from Xavier High School in 1974. She enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in California, where she received nurse’s training and became a Licensed Vocational Nurse in 1976. She lived in California for the next twelve years, working as an acute care nurse at various hospitals, including Cedars Sinai and Orange County Medical Center, both in the Los Angeles area. In 1987, she completed an Associate Degree in Nursing at Rancho Santiago College in Santa Ana, California, and returned to Appleton in 1988, working in the intensive care unit at Theda Clark until 1991. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Marian College in 1990, and continued at Theda Clark as an emergency room and resource nurse until 1996. Nancy then became the supervisor of nursing services at the Winnebago County Mental Health Institute in Oshkosh, a position she left a year and a half later when she first became ill. Diagnosed with cancer four years ago, Nancy continued to work during most of her illness, and had been employed most recently at Bellin Hospital in their critical care unit. In 2001, Nancy completed a Masters of Science Degree in Healthcare Administration at Cardinal Stritch College.
Her family would like to extend thanks to Dr. John Swanson and to the nurses and support staff at Appleton Medical Center and Theda Clark for the excellent treatment given to, and their unwavering support for, Nancy. They would also like to thank Dorothy Tennie, Rita Malchow, and Mickie Drexler for all their support. Nancy demonstrated an enthusiasm for life and a will to live that was inspirational to those around her. She was feisty, energetic, humorous and, above all, tenacious. She never gave up until she was absolutely forced to. In the end, she drew strength from the beautiful garden she tended and from the abundant love of her Mother who never faltered in the care she gave her daughter. As Nancy herself said, “my one goal in life was to make my Mother happy and proud.” Nancy amply succeeded. And she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Visitation will be at Wichmann Funeral Home on Oneida St. on Wednesday, September 25th from 4pm to 8pm and also one hour prior to the Mass at church. A Mass celebrating Nancy’s life will be held at Sacred Heart on Thursday, September 26th, at 11:30am with Father Jack Harper officiating. Interment will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Appleton. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established.
God saw she was getting tired,
And care was not to be,
So He put His arms around her
And whispered “Come with Me.”
With tearful eyes we watched her suffer,
And saw her fade away, and though we loved her dearly,
We could not make her stay.
A golden heart stopped beating,
Hard-working hands to rest,
God broke our hearts to prove to us,
He only takes the best.
