Myrtle Putman

September 1, 1906 — May 2, 2004

Age 97, was called to the side of her loving Lord and Savior on Sunday, May 2, 2004. Myrtle was born in the Winnebago County town of Black Wolf on September 1, 1906, daughter of the late Louis and Minnie (nee Miller) Carow. She was a 1925 graduate of the Winneconne High School, and following further training in teachers' college taught as many as eight grades in a one-room schoolhouse. She also instructed the children who were patients at the Sunnyview Sanitarium in Oshkosh. On October 20, 1945, she married Thomas Putman in Appleton; he preceded her in death in 1976. For a short time the couple resided in Manitowoc. After their relocation to Appleton, they became members of St. Mary Catholic Church where Myrtle was active with the Ladies Society, and worked for many years as a cook for the St. Mary School lunch program. Many will recall that Myrtle was an outstanding seamstress and had sewn garments for many friends and relatives as well as making costumes for various activities in the area. Myrtle was an excellent cook and was a member of the Appleton Homemakers Club. Until her health failed, she enjoyed bowling and driving her car. For the past twenty years, Myrtle had participated with her daughter and her family, and worshipped at Christ the Rock Church in Menasha.

Survivors include a son: Richard (Maxine) Dearstine of Winneconne; a daughter: Patricia (Jake) Jacobs of Appleton and their daughter, Avivah Jayne Jacobs, who was Myrtle's best friend. Other survivors include Jake's daughter, Paula (Bob) Sparks and their children Austin, Evan, and Jasmine; four sisters: Edna Biechler of St. Germain, Ada Stahl of Menasha, Marilyn (George) Gajewski of Neenah, and Beatrice Ziegelbauer of Oshkosh; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Myrtle was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Thomas, several brothers, sisters, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law.

Funeral services for Myrtle will be held at the funeral home chapel on Tuesday, May 4, 2004 at 7:00 PM with Pastor John Kieffer of Christ the Rock Church and Fr. Michael O'Rourke officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Appleton. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4:00 PM until the hour of the service.
