Mary Jane “Jane” Chmiel Garvey, 58, passed away on Sunday, December 4, 2005, at her home in Appleton. Jane was born on October 5, 1947, in Marinette, Wisconsin, to the late John C. and Lucille M. (Guenther) Chmiel. She lovingly taught kindergartners at Jefferson Elementary School in the Appleton School System for 35 years, earning the love and respect of students, parents and colleagues alike. She married Joseph J. Garvey on July 11, 1981 in Knowlton. Jane was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church, Appleton. Jane was recognized for her accomplishments throughout the years. She was valedictorian of her 1965 graduating class of Holy Cross High School in Merrill. Jane graduated magna cum laude from the University of Wisconsin—Stevens Point in 1969 with a BS degree in Kindergarten and Primary Education. In view of her teaching expertise, Jane was featured as a speaker at the 1999 Department of Defense Conference in Chicago; her talk focused on effective teaching strategies. Throughout her teaching career, Jane mentored new teachers by word and example. In retirement, Jane volunteered time to help in the Appleton and Three Lakes Schools Districts. Jane took joy in the simple things in life. One of her daily pleasures was going to the mailbox to get the mail and newspaper as she had done when she stayed with her grandmother as a young girl. She dearly loved her family and friends; that love was returned to her many times over. She loved to take walks, learn, read and travel. Jane was known for her quiet, gentle ways and her compassion for others. She is survived by her loving husband Joseph; brother Jack (Dorothy) Chmiel, Rhinelander; sister, Carol Lorbetske, Rhinelander; parents-in-law, Jim (Patty) Garvey, Appleton; brother-in-law, Jay (Anne) Garvey, Jr., Appleton; sisters-in-law, Susan Garvey, Scottsdale, Arizona, Barbara (Michael) Jackman, Dillon, Colorado, and Kathleen (Andrew) Kramer, Appleton, nephews John P. (Angela Uhl) Chmiel, Michael Lorbetske, Jr.; and Liam Jackman; nieces Becky Kramer and Jemma Jackman; great-nephew Wyatt and great-niece Isabelle Uhl-Chmiel. The family has begun the “Seeds for Learning—Jane Garvey Memorial Fund” at Jefferson Elementary School to continue Jane’s legacy of working with children. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the fund to honor her memory and continue her work. Jane will be greatly missed by her family and friends. The Funeral Liturgy will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 10, 2005, at ST. BERNARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1617 W. Pine Street, Appleton, with Fr. Dennis Ryan officiating. Friends may call at the Wichmann Funeral Home on Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and again Saturday directly at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services. There will be a Parish Prayer and Scripture Service at the funeral home on Friday at 7:00 p.m.. Interment will be in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church Cemetery in Knowlton, Wisconsin. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Dr. Jack Anderson, Dr. John D. Swanson, Jr., and the nursing staff of ThedaCare Hospice for their compassion and care.
