John "Jack" Schwaller

January 11, 1933 — October 12, 2012

John “Jack” Schwaller, age 79, of Appleton, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, October 12, 2012 at St. Elisabeth Hospital. Jack was born on January 11, 1933, son of the late Ray and Clara Schwaller. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1951, going on to receive his bachelors in social studies and education from Marquette University and his masters in administration from St. Thomas College. Jack also proudly served in the United States Army. In the summer of 1957, Jack married the love of his life, Mary Ellen McHugh at St Mary Catholic Church. They enjoyed 55 years of marriage and raised five beautiful children.

Jack began his teaching career in 1958, accepting a teaching position at Freedom High School. He went on to become assistant principal and eventually principal, a job that he truly loved. After retirement, Jack stayed extremely active, volunteering with the Housing Partnership, St. Joe's food pantry and Cursillo Catholic retreats. Every Wednesday, without fail, Jack would visit family and friends at St. Paul's home. He was also a member of the Freedom VFW, holding the positions of commander and quarter master. Jack was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing, skiing, traveling and gardening. Faith gave Jack strength and guidance throughout his life. He was a member of the parish council and trustee at St. Nicholas Catholic Church and a current member of St. Mary Catholic Church. Above all, he was a loving husband and father

Jack leaves behind his loving wife Mary Ellen; his five children, Julie (Bill) Ryno of Appleton, Paul (Annie) Schwaller of Green Bay, Chris (special friend Guadalupe Cob) Schwaller, Mary (Dave) Setzke of New Berlin and Becky Schwaller of Appleton. He is further survived by his grandchildren, Sarah and Caleb Ryno, Hunter and Sydney Schwaller, Kelsey Geiger, Lindsey Stindt, Joe and Abby Schwaller and Christopher and Jonathan Setzke; as well as great granddaughter Maddie Geiger; brothers, Delmer (Helen) Schwaller and Richard (Jo) Schwaller; sister, Sr. Marlene Schwaller; and brother-in-law, Norbert (Delores) McHugh. Jack will also be remembered by his nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.
