Isabel Brenner Black

January 2, 1906 — January 7, 2003

Age 97, passed away Tuesday, January 7, 2002 at Parkside Care Center in Little Chute. Isabel was born January 2, 1906 in Green Bay, daughter of the late William and Mathilda (Jantzen) Brenner. On June 22, 1935, she married Myron P. Black who preceded her in death in 1970.

Isabel Black was the last surviving member of the pioneer family of Andrew Clinton Black, who settled in Kaukauna in 1846. She held membership in the Outagamie County Historical Society as well as Immanuel United Church of Christ in Kaukauna where she was on the Kelso Cemetery board. Isabel was a 1924 graduate of Green Bay East High School and also graduated from Milwaukee Teachers’ College. She taught school in Plainfield and Oshkosh, and in later years served as a substitute teacher in Kaukauna. For twelve years she was the children’s librarian at the Kaukauna Public Library. In her early years in Kaukauna, she was active as a leader, organizational chairman, and writer and director of city-wide pageants for the Girl Scouts. In 1954, she was appointed co-chairman of the committee to organize the Kaukauna Hospital Auxiliary and served as its first president. With the closing of the Kaukauna Hospital in 1996, the Auxiliary became the Kaukauna Community Health Associates, of which Isabel was a member. She was also a member of Fidelity Chapter #94 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Appleton and was a life member of the Order for seventy-seven years. She served as a Past Matron of Odile Chapter #184 of Kaukauna and in 1945-46 was the Worthy Grand Matron of the Grand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star in the State of Wisconsin.

Isabel is survived by a son-in-law: Charles Crump of Brookfield, Wisconsin; and several close nieces and nephews: Bonnie Laird of Bloomington, Minnesota; Laurie (Bill) Lamberg of Manitowoc; Ben (Mary Jane) Laird of Green Bay; William (Peg) Laird of Green Bay; Ruth (Jim) Abraham of South Milwaukee; Steve Brenner of Green Bay; Linda Noey of Haleiwa, Hawaii; Sue (Paul) Finck of Washington, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her only daughter Carol Black Crump in 2001; three sisters: Elsie Brenner, Sophia Hinterthuer, Dorothy Laird; two brothers: Walter Brenner and George Brenner.

The funeral services for Isabel will be held at 12:00 Noon on Friday, January 10, 2003 at IMMANUEL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, 510 Sullivan Avenue in Kaukauna with Rev. Melinda Feller officiating. Interment will follow in Kelso Cemetery. Friends may call directly at the church on Friday from 10 AM until the hour of the service.
